Windows 10 update stops at 84% after running for 12+ hours, requiring a hard shutdown to...

For the second time in the past couple of months, when I have been forced to install Windows updates, it stops at 84% and never completes. I let it run over night for 12+ hours, because it says "Updates in progress, do not turn off your computer".

After 12 hours, I realized that the update is stuck so I do a hard shut down.

Then I do a restart and get a message that says "Undoing changes to your computer". After about 15 minutes I see the login screen and I am able to eventually log in and get my computer back.

Since Windows 10 will not allow me to completely stop updates, how can I prevent this from happening again?

I also opened a forum question about this back in May 2020 when this first happened but I never got a single reply -

It is obvious to me that there is a serious problem with the latest Windows update and I really need help with this please.

    :)

Windows 10 update stops at 84% after running for 12+ hours, requiring a hard shutdown to...

Windows Updated(16299.309).KB4088776 Restart is required to complete.

Hi dalchina. Good news, I followed your suggestion and reinstalled the update and now it appears as "installed correctly" *Biggrin Maybe it was not necessary to run the Windows Update Troubleshooter or maybe if necessary. But using it I do not think it could have worsened something. The installation was very fast, unlike the first time it showed step 1 and step 2 completed.

Thanks for the suggestions and for the time to respond Windows 10 update stops at 84% after running for 12+ hours, requiring a hard shutdown to... :) Best regards.

And thanks for the tip of that program, I'll have it on my list.
