Windows 10: Windows 10 Update stuck on 2% ?

Hi,

Anyone help with this one - how to download latest updates?

Yes W10 installed October, last successful update early November.

Now when try to install update shows downloading updates at 2% and no movement..been like this for a couple days now.

On the Details it shows:-

Upgrade to Windows 10 Pro, version 1511, 10586
Waiting for installation
Security Update.......
Waiting for download
Windows malicious software removal tool.....
Waiting for download
Cumulative update for windows....
Waiting for download

windows 10 updates are available but why downloading stuck at 2%?

Yes, two days installing at 2% is a problem. Normally you would not interrupt, but it's safe to insist now is an exception.

I would try using the front panel reset button on your PC first. If unresponsive, try a hard boot by pressing your front-panel power button for about ten seconds. If neither of those work, shut off the power supply.

Hopefully it will reboot normally.

Before running Windows Update again, check for errors by opening an elevated command prompt and running sfc \scannow. If errors are detected, Windows will attempt to correct them. Should it be unable to fix problems, you will need to use DISM to try and fix it.

If you haven't backed up, now would be a great time to do so! Also, if you're not allowing Windows to manage and update your drivers, you might want to allow it to do so before attempting the update again.

If the scan returns cleanly, then you can go ahead and try the update again.

If it hangs again, you might try an in-place installation (reset). First download an iso of the most recent installation file. When performing the reinstall, keep your programs, settings and files. Allow Windows to retrieve updates during the installation process. It should automatically install the latest version 1511 build 10586.29.

....however when trying to run sfc/scannow I get the dreaded..
..You must be an administrator running a console session in order to use the sfc utility
unsure what this means...as I am the sole user and Administator ?

Right-click the start menu icon, select Command Prompt (Administrator). Then enter the command:

sfc \scannow

Even if you're the only account, you still need to make sure you have admin rights for certain actions, thus two options for running Command Prompt.

Then carried out Windows Update - completed like a dream!

Off topic..can u advise on this little matter also..my profile in this Windows 10 forums shows Windows 8, whereas I have Windows 10..how do I change this?

At the top of this page or any page in this forum, top right, click User CP > left side, click Edit System Specs.............

As David indicated, you can update specs from your profile. You can also just click on My System Specs in any of your posts and edit from there, too.

Yes, as you say..loads of info within the forums..eg..whilst awaiting updating windows finally managed to locate how to avoid need to log in each time at start up - been bugging me for weeks!

 

That did it..tvm..always looks so obvious once its been pointed out!

 

There's no pride in any of this for most of us. If you're too proud to admit you don't know A LOT of this stuff, then you probably won't bother finding your way here in the first place.

That said, there are some uber-W10 geniuses around here!
