  1. Windows 10 Updates Destroyed My Desktop

I'm not sure this is the right forum. Microsoft has the worst customer feedback site. Here goes....Recently, I purchased a Dell Laptop with Windows 10 on it. I should I have waited and found another brand with Windows 8 still on it. Last week, as I was out of the room, Windows Anniversary Updates were installed on my system. When I returned and looked at my screen, I got a message essentially telling me that my desktop was destroyed. I did the natural thing and found a back door into Control Panel and used system restore. It worked the first time, but unfortunately, after installing a program, which required a restart, Windows hit me with updates again. It took twelve hours. It was an honest mistake, but, thanks to Windows corrupt program, this last restart move proved disasterous. This time when I attempted restore and waited ten hours, I lost my desktop completely. I don't know if a technician can fix this. I'm really angry with Microsoft. Though I have most of my files (some of them, such as Word, corrupted), retrieved after some wrangling, I have no idea what can be dne to retrieve or replace my desktop short of a miracle or clean copy of Windows (which would wipe my laptop clean). Microsoft customer feedback line is a joke. At least, I could say a few words here.

    ---- Thanks,

    :)

Welcome to TenForums, '...an independent web site and has not been authorized, sponsored, or otherwise approved by Microsoft' as it says at the bottom of the page. Your feedback won't get back to Microsoft - but to a sympathetic group of independent Windows 10 users.

Sounds like your account's Profile has become corrupted. Try creating another account. Log in to that and see if it has a working Desktop. If so, you could move your document across to the new account and use that from now on.

Can you elaborate on what you mean when you say your desktop was destroyed? What happens when you boot the computer, does it boot to a command prompt? Since you say that you recovered some of your files, it must boot somehow, I'm having trouble visualizing what your destroyed desktop looks like.

Why Microsoft ? If this is a recent laptop purchase, you should be dealing with Dell Support. Try running a Recovery from the OEM Recovery partition. If that doesn't work, they are based in TX where you are, so you should be able to send it back and, at worst, they will re-image the computer to Day One and maybe even update for you. But you'll have to get your personal files off or have previously backed them up ss they're ready to put on when you get it back.

No way would you see any type of message saying your desktop was destroyed. And I agree, you get support through Dell, not Microsoft and they are a lot worse then Microsoft.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the AE update and by now you should be updated to version 14393.351 or whatever the latest version # of Home is if you`re running home.

What version of W10 are you running ?
