Windows 10: windows 10 updates

For the second time in a row after an update my start button and taskbar have stopped working. I downloaded a batch file from a forum site the last time and it worked, so i used it again. My system is now working again. As this appears to be an issue that Microsoft cannot resolve I am now going to turn off automatic updates as a precaution as this is extremely annoying.
I would appreciate an email when the issue has been resolved and it is safe to turn updates back on.

OK, so i figured it out myself

Found the logfile in "C:\Windows\Minidump".

You need the Windows Development Kit to open it and a bit of googling to understand it.

Found out that a Daemon driver caused an error. Removed Daemon but this didn't solve it. (ps: Daemon itself worked normally).

I let hibernate my computer again and found another error with sptd2.sys: SCSI Pass Through Direct layer

More google and ended up on the duplexsecure site. Downloaded the W10 version and voila: problem fixed.

For the Windows support team: It would be really helpfull if you could pass problems to a more skilled helpdesk who can do more than proposing the standard solutions in case those won't work.

Windows 10 Unexpected shutdown on start up

OK, so I also found out that this occurs when sleepmode (for me after 3 hours) changes into hibernate mode.

Seems like the going into hibernate and/or starting up from HIbernate results in a shutdown. In safeboot it works perfectly.

Anyone any idea how I can figure out where it goes wrong. Is there a way to log this (I couldn't find it in bootlog)

It's also not a problem that I've noted before. For most people the updates (as contrasted with upgrade as in build 10586 for the general public) seem relatively painless.

This issue is very irritating and seems to affect thousands of people out there! In my case, MS upgraded my PC from Win 7 to WIN Pro 10240. Every time an update came through I lost all sorts of things including the start menu. Eventually, I downloaded the ISO and did a clean re-install, of ALL my software after the WIN 10 Pro install completed.
However, the very next update triggered the exact same problem.

Then the new build was released ( 1511) Peace reigned until the 6 January 2015 updates and back I was where I was before. The 13 January 2016 update made things s bad that I was forced to try a system reset to the last restore point. No sooner had I done that and the MS updates came through, back I was where I was before.

I have just tried the PC reset option, without ANY added software installed, and I have been faced with slow updates now for more than 9 hours! I am dreading to see what happens when this process completes. The Update progress bar has been showing 6% completed for almost the full 9 hours.

There just seems to be no cure for these issues. Current build show WIN 10 Pro build 1511 version 10686.0. Previous version was 10586.63

 

Hi, sorry to hear of your problems. After struggling last year with the initial upgrade process from Win 8 Pro, which took 2 attempts because of a conflicting program, Win 10 has been generally stable. I've had to deal with one issue where Cortana stopped working, and the usual issues of associations being reset after 10586 in November last.

I ignore the Win 10 start menu except to occasionally check it's still working, as it's worse than useless to me, and use Classic Shell (free) that properly represents a traditional start menu set of folders and shortcuts.

I've noticed no problems arising from the occasional updates, but some people have certainly been unfortunate - otherwise there wouldn't be so many threads on this and other forums.

Win 10 is immature, and demonstrates this too frequently.

So, what AV are you using?
Is your taskbar hidden?

Turning to your current reset:
Let me guess.. is the installation medium you are using for the 10240 build - summer last year?
If so, you have some 3.4Gb to download- the 10586 build in November.

As you've chosen to do a clean install, it would have been better to download a new iso, and use that, saving the large download and providing you with something you can use in the future for an

No added software installed at all at the moment nothing. The only protection available at the moment is Defender etc.
Taskbar is not hidden
No the build I used was the one I created in December (1511 10586) I checked for an update and found none available -- This is still the one available. I created that immediately after the upgrade and then immediately did a clean install from that ISO before installing any other software, in early December 2015.

Thanks for the link --- I will go through it while I have nothing else to do but wait for the updates to complete.

(Note. I have had problems with HP printer drivers in the past, so at the moment the printer is not connected at all and I deliberately deleted ALL HP related drivers before I started the PC Reset process.)


PS: I did know about the Process document in the link but in essence, that is the process I followed when I did the "Clean Install", except for having previously deleted all installed software. I will next time follow this process instead, as having to re-install all the sw I use is a real pain!

 

Thanks, surprised then at your slow download issues. When I do an install with the option of downloading updates as part of the installation I skip that- should it somehow go wrong, it would be a major waste of time.

Presumably you have a reasonable internet connection otherwise..?

You'll know system restore will be off when your install completes. (A strange MS choice).

The other thing you may well find useful is disk imaging.
This enables you to save a compressed copy of your disk/partitions which you can then update regularly e.g. prior to change, after successful changes, or simply periodically.

Thus when things go wrong, restoring the image is faster than anything above (e.g. 40 mins- or less with fast hardware and USB3).
E.g. Aomei Backupper or Macrium Reflect (free) - create the boot disk/device - + large external storage medium

 

The Internet connection is not hot but not that bad either. The updates took a total of 13 hours to complete. Version is now on 1511 10586.71.

Will look into the imaging idea. I do have a spare HDD that is compatible with the PC drive so it should be possible.


I will now be holding thumbs for the next few days .....

13 hours might be some sort of record.. that's my build no. too.

Besides the invaluable use of disk imaging there is one repair technique that probably would have saved you the pain of reinstalling you can note for future reference, one of the few really good things in Win 10:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade - Windows 10 Forums
- you need an appropriate Win 10 install medium (correct build and version) and your PC must be able to boot in normal mode.

This keeps all your programs and settings. But
- system restore will be turned off
- you may lose custom fonts
- you will lose customised system icons
- you might find the odd association changed
- you may need to re-establish your WiFi connection
- you will need to redo Windows updates subsequent to the build used

It takes around 2 hours (without downloads) - less on fast hardware, presumably.

Having to do a clean install of Win 10 pro after a hdd crash, I have to say the re-install is a painful experience, partly due to inexperience with Win10 but nevertheless the whole process is fraught with traps.

I won't go into them all, but in order to activate, yes necessary after a clean install whatever you think, I need version 10586. I have to wait for Windows to decide when to run the updates - updates tend to stick (or stop).

As AVG turned off Defender while unknowingly during a Defender update, all other updates were stalled, until I uninstalled AVG. I updated Defender updates manually till it was fully uptodate. However Windows Updates started the Defender update again first, the update ran to 4% quickly but is now stuck at 4%.

Please please Microsoft, this idea of no control of updates really smells, please revert to the old process so we can at least have some control of these, especially for those of us that fix things and manage re-installs.

However if anyone with more experience knows how to expedite/select updates or how to stop sticking updates, please let me know.


EDIT: I subsequently found that the update files (SoftwareDistribution & Catroot2) were corrupt, so had to be deleted. Updates now running including upgrade/new build 10586. Suggest MS needs to review the update process, too many problems with it.
