Windows 10 upgrade failed. Multiple Attemps.

    Background:

I have 3 PCs to upgrade and 512kbps internet so I decided it would be best to use the Windows 10 USB upgrade tool. After making the upgrade USB tried to upgrade my 1st PC by doing a clean install by booting from the USB, hoping it would be able to automatically activate or would accept my windows 7 key during installation, it did not. Before trying this I copied my original HDD to a temporary HDD. Since it did not activate I copied the temporary HDD to the original HDD( over Windows 10). Then I tried doing the upgrade from Windows 7 by clicking on the Setup application on my upgrade USB to just get the Windows 10 key and then do a clean install. I selected Keep everything and I choose to do updates now. The updates were taking too long so I canceled the upgrade.

    Problem:

I have tried 3 times to upgrade my Windows 7 PC to Windows 10 via the USB upgrade tool. Each time I selected to keep everything and not do updates ( im just upgrading to get the Win 10 key and then I well do clean install ). Each time I get an error 0x8007002C-0x4000D and a message like " upgrade failed in SECOND_BOOT phase with error during DATA_MIGRATE. It gets to about 70% before I get this error. One of the times I also disabled AVG first, it only disables until next reboot ( thought is was worth a try it helped a couple of times when I did an inplace reinstall of Win 7).

    Update:

4th try: Tried again to do the upgrade, keeping everything and not doing updates. This time I completely uninstalled AVG and ran Windows disk cleaner with all boxes checked before running the upgrade. It made it to 76% percent complete, which puts it in the third/final stage "Configuring Settings". It gave me the same error again.

Also, I've looked in the common problems thread and under Error 0x8007002C-4000D which is the error i'm getting, it says to look in %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log for the file causing the problem. I'm having trouble finding anything so I've attached the file.

    :)

Windows 10 upgrade failed. Multiple Attemps.

I had that same thing happen on one of my upgrades. It rolled back to 7. I tried again and was successful.
You do not need to enter any key during the upgrade or the clean install. Just hit "skip" and keep going.

Right, but I need to do the upgrade first ( and then clean install if I want) for Win 10 to register?

    Correct .
I've had no problem with getting activated with the upgrades and then doing clean installs on two computers. Just had that one glitch " failed second reboot" on one of them.

Windows 10 upgrade failed. Multiple Attemps.

I'm still getting the error as of my 5th attempt. This time I tried doing it with the updates. If someone could direct me to some log files I should look at or post, it would be great.

I am unable to upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10, because one important file (Nvidia graphics card Geforce 9800 GT driver) that MS sent to me via "Windows Update" couldn't be installed. Upgrade to Win 10 stopped and revert to Win 7.
    Error code: 80070017
Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Does your Dell have onboard video as well? If so, remove the Nvidia card, do the upgrade then reinstall it for Win 10.

Thanks for your kind reply. I do have a Dell, but that one is not eligible for the Win 10 free upgrade.
    --------
The one I am having trouble with upgrading to Win 10 is a Gateway FX4710-UB802A (with Win 7). It has a Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT graphics card in it. I have never used a computer without a graphics card in it. I don't know if I remove it whether I can see anything on the display or not.
Anyway, the error code is 8700-0017
    Thanks again.

I checked the specs and that appears to be the only video, no onboard.

Try the latest driver: GeForce Windows 10 Driver then try the upgrade again.

    Ztruker:

The driver is Geforce Win 10 Driver. Version 341.71. Release Date: 2015.7.29.
The download was successful, but the installation failed. So, unable to upgrade to Win 10.
Just sent an email to Gateway Tech Support, waiting to see if they can help.

I appreciate very much of your time trying to help.

If eventually that this problem is resolved, I will post that here.

I wonder why it won't install.

ListDevices.txt in the downloaded driver file has this in it:

    NVIDIA_DEV.0601 = "NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT"

which is the video you have.

Did it tell you why it wouldn't install? ANy other useful message?
