Windows 10: Windows 10 upgrade from Windows 7 OEM

I have Lenovo x230 with genuine Windows 7. Can I freely upgrade to windows 10?

I downloaded windows media creation tool and did direct upgrade to windows 10. My laptop is upgraded to Win 10 but it is not getting activated.

Yes, the upgrade to Windows 10 inherited the type of licence (OEM etc) from the original Windows 7 licence.

 

Can't activate after hardware upgrade.

Did you upgrade from an OEM or Retail store bought copy of Windows 7?

If you had originally upgraded from a retail Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 license to the Windows 10 free upgrade, yes, you can.

If Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 came preinstalled with your computers motherboard, what is known as a an OEM license, then you cannot.

 

Enter the windows 7 COA key on blue sticker on base of laptop or under battery in "Change product key"

Note installed edition of Windows 10 must be correct upgrade path eg if 7 Home SL, you need to install 10 Home SL.

 

Do not have sticker in Laptop. I found the following using showkeyplus application

 

As per ShowKeyPlus application, Window 7 OEM marker present in firmware.

 

Right click This PC and choose Properties and choose Change Product Key. Enter your product key from showkeyplus and press Next. If it still won't activate, call Microsoft

 

I found COA sticker with a Win 7 key and it worked fine. Now my laptop is updated and activated with Windows 10 Pro

 

Today I download Windows 10 ISO using media creation tool. And do a fresh windows 10 installation. When I tried to activate with the COA key, it is giving the error -




Note that previously I did direct upgrade from Win7 to Win10 Home premium using windows media creation tool. Then as per suggestion I use windows key (COA, found in the laptop under battery) to activate. It got activated with Windows 10 Pro. So, today I downloaded Windows 10 using Media Creation tool and install Windows 10 Pro. This time the COA key is not accepted for activation.

 

Are you positive it's a W7 Pro key ?

Yes, I did upgrade to Win10 Home without knowing anything. When activated with COA key in Win10 home, it got activated and it showed Win10 Pro. After activation I run showkey and saved it. Here is showkey info -

... run it though "Check..." and let us know the edition.

No. I got my Laptop's COA which was below to the Battery.

 

Yah that's all fine.. what I'm asking is what edition does the COA key show when you enter it in ShowKey's Check Product Key.
