    Windows 10 upgrade problem

Install Macrium Reflect Free in Windows 10. Under the tools Menu option, you will find the utility to fix boot problems,. It should find your Windows 7 and then highlight it and add it to your boot menu.

Then boot into Windows 7 and run showkey from this forum to retrieve your Windows 7 product key.

    Then we'll go from there.

  2. Thanks NavyLCDR .

I will venture to do as you suggest. I may need some respite, as our kids and grandkids have invited us to join them at a cottage next Friday. I have to get my 2002 Buick Regal checked out for this 600 km round trip into the north.

I got a terrible scare this morning. My Windows 10 after booting came up with Critical error notification. The error was that neither my Start nor Cortana are functioning. I could open some files, but not programmes No Task or start up at the bottom either. After several attempts to restart as suggested, I used CCleaner to check for registry errors and it rebooted OK. The Cortana thing is weird, as it is not yet released for use in Canada.

  3. Great thanks! I have never checked a registry in a non bootable HDD (Win 7) . I'll have to go looking in the Win folders.

  4. Windows 10 upgrade problem

Sorry I was ill the last 2 weeks. It takes a lot longer to recover at 70 (Irarely get ill!) This is an update for recommendations to repair my Win 7 Pro 32 bit drive. It did not work. After entering the language and country, it came back asking me to pick an OS. There was no OS to pick from. I even three Command line boot repairs proposed elsewhere. Just one of the three succeeded. I think Win 10 even though installed on the other drive, erased the existence of Win 7 on the other drive.

Hi Goodgenie and welcome back*Smile Hope your time with your grandchildren was fun, in spite of your poor health. (I think that was you driving somewhere to see the grandkids lol Can't really remember if that was you any more *Redface)

I've got nothing further to add at this point as, to be honest, NavyLCDR has much more expertise in this area than I. I'll be keeping an eye on the thread though, just in case I have something useful to contribute to help resolve your difficulties.

Does the Win 7 Pro 32 bit drive show up as a drive letter in your Windows 10? If so, can you see the Windows 7 file structure on it like Windows folder, Users folder, etc. If you can then...

    Download Showkey from this forum:
    Showkey - Windows 10 Forums

When you run it in your Windows 10, click on Retrieve Key from Backup. In the box that opens, leave the word SOFTWARE in the filename block, but in the left column, point it to the Windows 7 Pro drive, Windows, System32, config. Once you are in the Windows, System32, config folder, you will see SOFTWARE - that is what showkey will read. Hit open, and hopefully in a couple of seconds it will show you your Windows 7 key.
