Windows 10: Windows 10 Upgrade Stuck on Welcome Screen

Hi,

I upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10 at the first opportunity on July 30 after registering with Microsoft. The upgrade appeared to progress smoothly and I was able to boot the computer to see the new desktop screen. However, very soon after this first boot, the computer asked me to restart to finish the upgrade. This I did and my computer has since been rendered unusable. Every time I boot, the computer gets stuck on the welcome screen. It displays the generic circular user icon, with my name written underneath and the word "Welcome" written underneath this. The animated "computer working" icon (the little dots which rotate again and again) is displayed next to this. However, it never goes away. I left the computer for 12 hours and nothing changed (the little dots kept on rotating all the while). The computer otherwise appears fine (ie. the multimedia buttons at the top of the keyboard work fine) but the OS cannot get past this screen, no matter what I do.

I have unplugged all USB devices. I have tried booting with the power cable in and out. I have gone into the Advanced tab of the setup menu and disabled (and re-enabled) things like Bluetooth and Wi-Fi top test if this makes a difference. Nothing does. As things currently stand, I am completely unable to use my computer and all my files are stranded. Several of them are desperately needed.

This has caused huge anguish as my computer has been rendered unusable at a particularly unfortunate moment (ie. I really, really need to use the machine and no other will do as the files I need are, currently, only stored on my hard-drive).

FWIW, I have tried pressing F8 to boot the computer in safe mode, but this doesn't seem to work (it results in a back lit but otherwise black screen).

Thank you for the response.

I suggest you to follow the steps provided below and perform a repair.

Step 1: Download Windows 10 from the below link and create media
creation tool:

Step 2: After creating the tool perform an Automatic Repair.

I would like to inform that, if your Windows 10 is not able to boot or startup, Automatic Repair will come into action and try to diagnose and fix the issue. It will scan system files, registry settings, configuration settings
and more and try to fix the problem on its own, automatically. Perform the Automatic repair:

1. When your computer starts, wait for the manufacturer logo to check the option for boot menu, it will usually be F12.

2. The boot menu key might differ with each manufacturer. If you are unable to find the boot menu key, you may refer the user manual.

3. Restart the computer, when the manufacturer's logo is displayed, keep pressing the Boot
menu option key to enter the boot menu and change the boot option to CD\DVD ROM.

4. After you boot your computer using Windows 10 DVD, a black screen appears with gray text "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD".
Press any key.

5. Select the correct time and Keyboard type.

6. Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner

7. Click on Troubleshooting, advanced option and then click Automatic
repair.

Windows 10 upgrade stuck on Welcome Back Screen

Plugged the wireless antenna back in and it can't find it and I am now dead in the water. Who called this an upgrade?!

 

I had to power off to shutdown, after that a powerup and it went a bit further, followed many many hangs.
Conflicting virus checkers was the problem, defender was running and Panda for windows 8.1 was trying to run.
Eventua;;y got it running long enough to remove panda, shutdown defender and install an uptodate Panda.

Just to say, I found no solution to this, but was able to dig out my old Windows 7 installation disc, and use it to reboot. The menu which eventually popped up gave me the option of rolling back, and this I have done. My computer is once again usable, but I do not dare try Windows 10 again. Bad, bad experience.

 

May I suggest to switch OFF any Anti Virus software running in the BG.

You can also try the following:
- Backup all your data
- Make sure you have activation keys etc of all your software
- do a complete clean install of Windows 7 (or 8)
- don't install any drivers yet
- normally you would not need to activate your copy of windows
- make sure you have the MediaCreationTool on a stick
- copy the MediaCreationTool to the hard drive
- Start the MediaCreationTool and click on UPGRADE THIS COMPUTER

Now the upgrade should run smooth
re-install your programs afterwards
