Windows 10- Upgraded - Windows Old?

    Hey gang,

I finally upgraded my Windows 8.1 install to Windows 10 this morning. I must say it was very effortless, the upgrade install went very smoothly. All my programs remained intact, my 4 physical disks retained everything properly. Even my documents, pics, and videos remained with the pointers properly to their location ( have them on separate drive from the C drive).

Just got through installing some latest Windows 10 drivers for my hardware. Based on initial impressions, I certainly think I am going to like 10 better than 8.1

Regarding the windows.old folder, can I just delete that folder or does that need to be done in another way? I don't see a need to keep it, as I did a full system image prior to doing the upgrade, so I have that if I should need it.

    Thanks for any tips,

    :)

  2. Windows 10 Unexpected shutdown on start up

OK, so i figured it out myself

    Found the logfile in "C:\Windows\Minidump".

You need the Windows Development Kit to open it and a bit of googling to understand it.

Found out that a Daemon driver caused an error. Removed Daemon but this didn't solve it. (ps: Daemon itself worked normally).

I let hibernate my computer again and found another error with sptd2.sys: SCSI Pass Through Direct layer

More google and ended up on the duplexsecure site. Downloaded the W10 version and voila: problem fixed.

For the Windows support team: It would be really helpfull if you could pass problems to a more skilled helpdesk who can do more than proposing the standard solutions in case those won't work.

    Cheers

  3. Windows 10 Unexpected shutdown on start up

OK, so I also found out that this occurs when sleepmode (for me after 3 hours) changes into hibernate mode.

Seems like the going into hibernate and/or starting up from HIbernate results in a shutdown. In safeboot it works perfectly.

Anyone any idea how I can figure out where it goes wrong. Is there a way to log this (I couldn't find it in bootlog)

Windows 10- Upgraded - Windows Old?

Right click on start, right click on run, type cleanmgr, click ok. The disk clean up box pops up, choose the disk you want to clean up (for me C: was where the windows.old file was) Then click on "cleanup system files" again choose what disk you want to clean up and it will check and allow you to delete previous windows installations, etc...

Check the items you want it to clean up and click ok, that's pretty much it.

    Good luck

Windows.old is there for you if you need to go back to Win 8.1
Since you are happy with Win 10 and see no need to revert back to Win 8.1, you can delete it using Disk Cleanup as suggested to you.

However, windows.old is supposed to be removed automatically after 30 days of Windows 10 being installed.
If you are not hard-pressed with disk space, you might want to leave it alone and see if it will get removed automatically after 30 days.

Thanks for the info. Having my disk images I am not too concerned, as I would probably use them to revert back to 8.1 if needed.
Nice to know about the 30 day thing though, I am not cramped for space by any means so I may just wait and see if that takes care of it.

    Thanks,

Windows 10- Upgraded - Windows Old?

Just a heads up, dburne: Depending on how you upgraded and which build you upgraded to, you may or may not get entire removal of windows.old using the suggested method. If you find that it is not entirely removed and there are lingering files in the structures/sub-folder(s), let us know. It appears there are some permissions problems down in that folder for some users on some upgrade/install paths depending on build - just let us know and it can be addressed.
