Windows 10: Windows 10 - user account 'disappeared' from login options though is still visible on other...

Dear reader, the problem that I have arose about a year ago. So far I have not found a way to solve it and it's driving me crazy hence you are my last resort for finding a solution.


I am the sole user of my laptop and use a microsoft account to access windows 10 on my computer. However, after a big update in the fall of last year (2017) when restarting my laptop, windows pretended that my device did not have any users, it pretended to be empty. This forced me to create a new account to enter windows, which I did.


Now when I startup my laptop to login to windows it still only shows one account (the new user), likewise when I look at the overview of users in the system settings I still see only one account. However, if I go to my C drive and look at the users there I clearly see two users (i) the old account which I used before the update and (ii) the new account which I have been using ever since. Luckily I can still access all my old files by browsing through the user folders on the C drive. But I would rather just access my old account or merge it with my new one or even just delete it to get rid of it and save up drive space. But there seems no way for me to access my older account. It would be great if any of you has tips to help me out.

It has been suggested to go to 'computer management' and there change account settings in 'local users and groups'. However I use Windows 10 home edition which does not have this function available. As you can see in the picture below.

User accounts not visible in Windows login screen.

I realize that you are unable to see the user accounts in the Windows login screen, let me assist you.

This issue might happen if the user account is disabled, I suggest you to follow the below steps to check if the user accounts are disabled and try enabling them.

• 
  Press Windows key + X key and click on
  Computer Management.
  
• 
  Click on Local Users and Groups in the left pane.
  
• 
  Double click on Users option and check if the accounts are visible.
  
  (The user accounts with a downward arrow symbol on it are disabled accounts.)
  
• 
  Double click on the account that you want to enable.
  
• 
  In the General tab, uncheck the option
  Account is disabled.
  
• 
  Click on Apply and then Ok.
  
• 
  Restart the system and check if the issue is resolved.

Cannot Login with New User Account in Windows 10

I suggest you to Enable
the built in Administrator account in Windows 10, and then try to create new user account and check if it helps.

I suggest you to refer the steps below and check if it helps

• 
  Press Windows+ X, select
  Command Prompt, and then click Run as Administrator.
  
• 
  When you are prompted by User Account Control, click Continue.
  
• 
  At the command prompt, type net user administrator /active: yes, and then press Enter.
  
• 
  Type net user administrator
  <Password>, and then press Enter.
  
  Note In this command, <Password> represents the actual password that you want to set for the administrator account.
  
• 
  Type exit, and then press Enter.
  
• 
  Log off the current user account. And login and check whether your able to login to windows or not.

Strange Windows 10 User Account issue.

Unfortunately I had done those steps numerous reboots, it just, reappears for no good reason. The base account isn't even a Microsoft account, it's a local account.

I haven't quite tried the built in administrator account on W10, but so far in my experience on my own computer, the built in account seemed to have absolutely no more control than I did on my own.

It's just strange, I go in, it warns me twice about deleting the account, then it's gone. Reboot, and it's back?

EDIT: Just to specify, both command line and Netplwiz both say only HIS account exists on the computer, it doesn't list this rogue account. This is what I meant in my first post about the fact that even Windows doesn't seem to believe it exists, HALF the time. *Frown
