Windows 10: Windows 10 - User Profile Service service Cannot load

Morning Everyone,

We had a user receive the 'User Profile Service service cannot be loaded' error the other day. He was a normal user, had used his laptop perfectly fine the day previously with no issue. He was running Windows 10 1607.

When I tried to log in as well, I got the same error. I did an internet search and I tried the usual things, such as the registry entries and copying the default profile folder (which did get further, but then timed out trying to load Windows which put us back to square one.

I was able to sign in with the local Administrator once, but then when I tried again later, I got the same error. The one thing that I could not do, was to delete the users profile (and given that it happened to all users trying to log on to the laptop, I didn't think it would do much good.

Anyway after much back and forth, I managed to get a copy of 1803 and as able to log on as local admin and then run the update.

The update ran successfully and the laptop was back to letting the users sign in.

So the question is what was it that the update changed that fixed the error? I understand that the update pretty much puts new windows files all over the place, but does anyone know files or services that might have been over-written that would solve this?

Hello,

When attempting to login to my computer, I get the following message:

"The User Profile Service service failed the sign-in.

User profile cannot be loaded."

I referred to this Help article,You receive a "The User Profile Service failed the logon” error
message,

but the only difference is I only have one user profile on this computer. So, I can't login with another user to go through the steps listed in this post.

Any suggestions?

I am using registry editor from command prompt. Drilled down to c:windows\system32\config inside the Load Hive dialog window. Have selected (checked box) the SAM file; clicking on Open opens error message that says:


SAM
This file is in use.
Enter a new name or close the file that's open in another program.

I am at a loss, since I am not running any other program!

Any suggestions?

The SAM file is listed as being 64KB file size.

This issue might be due to the User profile Services, please follow the below and check.

I suggest you to Check the status of User profile services.

Steps:

• Press Windows + R to open Run command, type
  Services.msc and press Enter.
• Search for User Profile Service, right click on it and
  start the service.
• Also, set the Startup type to
  Automatic.
• Now check if you are able to log-in.
