Windows 10: Windows 10 uses only 75% or 3/4 RAM

My PC has 4.00 GB RAM installed and since I am using windows 10, I have noticed in the Performance tab of Task Manager, that the allocated Memory is not more than 3.0 GB out of 4.0 GB. Why windows 10 restricts? It doesn't use 1 GB available for it and I must use this 1 GB. Most of the times (or even always) My allocated Memory is in range of (2.5 of 3.0). Frequently I get the message: "Your computer is low on memory" and this restriction is causing many open applications to crash and even entire system crash and reboot/restart. I must solve this problem in any cost and if not then I must uninstall windows 10 and go back to windows 7. I need your help.

I've been having issues after updating to windows 10 for a while now. I have a Lenovo Ideapad with 4 gb of ram. After upgrading to Windows 10, it seems like the disk speed and ram memory has decreased. And it is windows 10 64 bit. For example, Edge is using
187 mb ram right now, if i convert that to percentage, it says it's around 12,5%, which means that the total amount it uses is 1500 mb.

I read somewhere that this was probably due to virtual memory, so i tried adjusting the size of the virtual memory, and completely disabling it. None of it worked. Then i tried reinstalling Windows 10, but that hasn't solved my issue either.

Bios recognizes 4gb of ram, windows recognizes 4gb of ram, but for some reason it only uses 1,5 gb, and disk speeds are also slow (I have a SSHD and it should be way faster). As you can see on this screenshot it's using around 13%, i think the amount was
around 193 mb when i took the screenshot.









I've also tried changing battery performance modes to high performance, using both lenovos own profiles and windows versions. I've also updated all drivers from lenovo's webpage, and i have no updates available in windows update.

Can anyone help me?

Hi, you can't force Windows to use a specific amount of memory, and usually it will be using only part of your installed RAM.

I expect you know that where RAM demand exceeds available RAM, the paging file is used.

Can you check its settings and post a screenshot similar to this?




Do you have a video card that uses shared RAM? That will make less RAM available to you.

Assuming you are using 64 bit Windows, adding RAM is relatively cheap.

In addition to what dalchina requested, would you please post 3 additional screenshots, all from Task Manager. They will give us a good idea what is running and your memory picture.

The Startup Tab. If you don't have all the columns I show, just right click any column header and check off the necessary columns.





The Details Tab. Again, if you don't have the columns I show, add them the same way. On this one, click the Working Set column so it will sort descending most used memory to least. Post just the first page.

I just opened Nvidia Control Panel and then System Information. In there I found Shared System Memory: 2029 MB. It's almost two complete gigabytes! As you said, this may restricts my RAM to be used not more than 75%.

I also have to tell you that I have only 3 partitions: C, D and E.
How did you open the three windows: System Properties, Performance Options and Virtual Memory?

EDIT: I succeed to open these three windows. In Virtual Memory window I see the column: Paging File Size (MB) shows "None" in all three rows for C, D and E under "Drive [Volume Label]" column. Also the "No paging file" radio button is checked and the others "Custom size" and "System managed size" are not checked.

Total paging file size for all drives:

Minimum allowed: 16 MB
Recommended: 1403 MB
Currently allocated: 0 MB

Erez, I don't have a Nvidia graphics card, but that sounds high. It;s not hogging all of it, but it will battle with the OS doing graphics work, like videos, movies, etc. Is there a way to reduce the shared? Say to 1GB (1048MB)? Somebody @dalchina who knows these cards should answer.

That says you're not using a paging file, so Windows gets short of memory, can't page RAM to disk, and your system crashes. (Looking at it very simplistically). That's not the default setting- so I'm wondering why you disabled paging?

You should enable it.

 

You are NOT using the paging file. The memory is thrashing and crashing. Turn the System Managed size ON, and re-start the PC. Then check the memory displays in your first post.

 

As to the shared RAM- my Nvidia card has 2Gb dedicated and 4Gb shared.

That it shares RAM doesn't mean Windows can't use that RAM. Normally the video card won't be using that RAM.

Unless your card has no dedicated RAM and is an integrated video card, it's somewhat unlikely it will impinge on Windows at all.
This is something Windows manages. That's my very limited understanding, and I'm very happy for someone to add more or correct this.

 

Erez, is that before or after you turned on Paging? Looks like before.

 

I disabled it, because I have very few space available in my C drive. That's why. I always have less than 1 GB available. Currently I have about 900 MB in there. I must say that I installed windows 10 in C drive, neither D nor E drives.
C drive is always used by all running apps. As you said, I can extend my RAM and this is cheap if I am running 64 bit operating system. That's the best solution for me. I am about to extend it to 8 GB RAM. Thanks for your help and assistance!

 

@Erez, glad you found a solution that works for you. A question, though.... After you installed/upgraded Windows 10, did you ever do a Disk Cleanup? 900MB left is extremely low. Can you post a pic of your Disk Management screen showing the C, D, and E drives?
