I'm using Windows 10 Home Insider Preview (Fast), I see all UWP apps (include Photos, Setting,...) have bad font rendering, but I not sure it is Windows problem or my laptop problem

    Setting (bad font rendering)

    Photo (bad font rendering)

    File Explorer (good font rendering)

    Edge (good font rendering)

    Todo (bad font rendering)

    Start Menu (bad font rendering)

How can I improve it? I don't hope it will better like MacOS or Ubuntu, but I want it better than now

Win 10 default reader app font rendering

    Dear Mr Ramesh Kumar,

The troubleshooter you suggested finds no problems with the Store and its apps general operation, neither do I.

Also the issue I'm experiencing is not related to Store launching instead of Settings that is discussed in the topic you referred to.

The drivers (Intel video) and the system are up to date and cause me no troubles.

    So my practical question remains:

The default Reader app, when it renders PDF files, seems to ignore ClearType settings for the fonts rendering. Not for the fonts in the Reader interface - they are OK, but for the fonts in the documents. When document is displayed at a scale less than 100
% the fonts a blurry and tiresome to read, and the Reader app is the only PDF reader that has this problem.

Neither there are problems with how fonts are displayed in other Store apps I've used, so it is not the system, drivers or Store general issue - it's only one app (and to the pity the one offered in Windows by default) that I need to adjust.

Please let me know if there is a way to make the default Win 10 Reader app follow the system-wide ClearType settings when rendering documents or whether there is a possibility to adjust anti-aliasing settings for that app individually, without affecting
    other applications.

    Best regards

  3. Microsoft Adds Ability to Block Win32 Apps from Install on Windows 10

Yes, UWP is an interpreter, an app running in UWP can't function without the interpreter. Only the UWP core has access to the actual hardware, the app does not.

By not having direct access to the hardware, they perform slower. UWP has to translate everything and make sure it passes safety and security checks.

If UWP has issues, all of the apps running on top of it also will. I've seen that in early release of Windows 10 where all UWP based, Windows-included apps broke (Edge, Calculator, Mail, etc.). Granted, it was only broke in one user account.

    Font rendering in Windows 10

    Hi All,

One of themain reasons I find Windows 10 a major step backwards is the quality of font rendering.

After doing plenty of research - and using the magnifier tool - it obvious that a different rendering process is being used compared to Windows 7, which universally used 'colour smoothing' for ClearType. However, in W10, some fonts are 'monochrome smoothed'
while others are 'colour smoothed'. (use the magnifier to see what I mean) The mono-smoothed characters are FAR less readable than those with colour processing. Apparently this is defended for the reason that colour-smoothing cannot give consistent results
on 'some rotated displays' because of the arrangement of the pixels in the display panel. Fine, but at least give us the option of controlling the rendering strategy for desktop/laptop use. And, if there IS a problem with colour-smoothing, then why is it still
used in some places and not others? The areas that are mono-smoothed tend to be the content - such that it gives me fatigue and eyestrain. The better colour-smoothing seems to be reserved for menus and informational areas. Maybe this is by design to stop me
using my PC for too long?

Is it possible to change the smoothing process that is applied to content fonts? Obviously, this processing is avaialble because it's there in other areas...

    Thanks, Alibear
