Windows 10: Windows 10 Versions Experience

My HP Compaq nc6120 runs 1909 quite happily from a Windows To Go USB boot, but I can’t upgrade the HDD from 1709 to 1809 or 1909. After hours of thrashing they both end with the ‘IRQL NOT LESS THAN OR EQUAL’ error. I also can’t get past the OOBE stage for a direct install of 1809 or 1909 via WintoHDD. For both 1809 and 1909, they end up with the Blue JAM of Death screen a blue screen with the message ‘Just a Moment’ that lasts forever. If I tap Shift F10 before OOBE gets to the JAM screen I can open a command window and type winver.exe which confirms that the later version of Windows 10 is installed. I can also type taskmgr.exe which opens with a blank Processes tab screen but correctly populates the Details tab screen. If I type explorer.exe I get a sort of non-working Start bar, but I can’t get to the desktop.

Using Rufus to create the WTG USB, I alsohad problems getting past the OOBE non-skippable OOBEEULA error, but eventually succeeded by using the:

net user Administrator /active:yes
net user /add user_name mypassword
net localgroup administrators user_name /add

%windir%\System32\Sysprep\sysprep.exe /oobe /reboot

Approach, though I don’t understand why this worked and it didn’t work when I tried it on the HDD install OOBE.

I’d be happy to share thoughts with anyone who’s had similar experiences.

Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

The Windows Welcome experience will only be shown after installation of updates and occasionally when you sign in to highlight what's new and suggested by design. For more information about the new features and content of Windows 10 1803, please refer to

Also, make sure that the Windows welcome experience is enabled on your PC. Follow the steps below:

1. Open Settings > System > Notifications & actions.
2. Under Notifications, toggle the switch On "Show me the Windows welcome experience after updates and occasionally when I sign in to highlight what's new and suggested".
