Windows 10: Windows 10, why truncated username?

I've noticed for a long time that my username on my windows 10 machine was missing the last letter of my name.


It was a minor nagging issue that I've deferred dealing with until recently. After all, it basically just appears when I use powershell and it starts up in C:\Users\< misspelled name>. I had assumed that I must have made a typo during the initial setup of windows.


Today I finally decided to correct the problem. It's not trivial. It requires following some step-by-step instructions and trusting advice from random people on the internet. And if you mess up, you end up with a corrupted user profile like I did. The only recourse then is total reinstallation of the OS. Not fun. Lots of time down the tubes.


I made a mental note to be careful about spelling my name correctly this time. During install, it asked for my Microsoft Account credentials, no problem, but then it never asked for a username. And after it was all over, AGAIN, my username was truncated. This was NOT good news.


After some googling, I found out that Microsoft does this ON PURPOSE, they know about it and it has been happening since Windows 10 launched.


WHY?


It's my name, on my personal computer. What business does Microsoft have deciding what username to give me on my own machine? It's not like it even matters to them, as the microsoft account uses an email address as an identifier. Moreover, it's risky to correct this misspelling, can you even imagine how many people end up re-installing their OS?
