Jody there is nothing better than a pair of liquid cooled component Dynaudio speakers with the bass component filled with quartz sand and a simple Carver amp, eyesore or not, the sound is perfect.

Burning, printing and packaging millions of DVDs would be far more expensive than loading up millions of USB drives.

The reason why they're doing this is because most new machines don't even have optical drives any more.

That's because all the OEMs what to be the thinnest and lightest, which is a shame for people who use laptops as a desktop replacement. You used to be able to remove the DVD drive and add an additional internal SSD/HDD.

  5. My ASUS laptop came with dual drive bays, so no need to remove the DVD drive. I hear what your saying though. That's a common mod these days.

oh I'm a bit jealous now. Just a bit, because the USB 3.0 HDD does it's job(system boots fast if I turn the drive on AFTER booting) and the DVD came in handy for ripping.

  7. I put two SSD's in, a 128GB for Windows and a 256GB for my data. The original drive went into a USB 3 drive enclose. I use it for backup and what won't fit on the 256GB drive. Mostly MSDN ISO's.

  9. No old style spinner drive if that's what you mean. An SSD is a hard drive, its just solid state drive.

  11. Don't laptops come with the fantastic ( *sarc ) OEM install partitions?

Just like Fusion power has only been "a decade away" (for the last ~60 years). *Biggrin

  12. I love my optical discs. I have a DVD burner in every machine except the Asus Netbook (waiting for 10 as it is leaner than 7). I do not have a standalone Blu Ray player but have Blu Ray drives in my media and main PC's have Blu Ray and DVD burners. Always on the look out for CD's at garage sales, stores , Amazon and E Bay world wide. Just got a rare CD from Germany to add to my collection. I like to have the music in a real form so I can rip it to FLAC and play it with Winamp 5 in jukebox mode. Obviously I have 2 4gb USB drives to install Windows 7 64/32 bit Universal and also will do the same for Windows 10. I'll make my own. As to making the packaging for USB drives it will be very similar to DVD packaging. It will have to be secure to prevent theft of the codes or drive. I suspect the cost difference in mastering the DVD and USB are similar. You can only copy the data over to the drive in real time. The main difference will be the higher cost of the USB drive. I wonder if this could lead to music being available in the same way, on a USB drive or SD drive? That would be handy as the cd case and disc take up some room when you have 30 years worth. If downloads of FLACs were available I would by them. I get some CD's from Amazon and use the "free" MP3 download until the CD arrives.

hold on hause, my asus (G751JY) laptop did to, but i still put a ssd in the optical drive bay. in fact, i have four ssd's in my computer, now. there is one in the optical drive bay, a 256g samsung, one in bay two, a 500g crucial, and two in drive bay one, the first is a 1tb 840 evo and the last one is the fastest thing on the planet right now, a sm951 samsung pcie 3 x4 500g. so never count out using the optical bay for a ssd. although it's a lot slower port , it's still faster than any hdd, and gives me a lot more function than an optical drive, which i almost never use. i still have my blueray writer, but i rarely ever throw it in there. i can hook it up as an external if i need to, but just never seem to have a need for dvd's or bd's. i travel a lot, and dvd's and bd's are heavy.

Thumbs are a much better recording medium for sure. They are smaller, faster, have thousands of times more capacity, and are more durable and reliable because they have no moving parts. Additionally, they are immune to electromagnetic interference, and are unharmed by surface scratches unlike CDs or DVDs.

Exponentially as fast as tech is innovating today, I'm surprised MS or others haven't presented this much earlier. Old tech really. 16 years old as a matter of fact.

A real good comparison, try creating a system image with Macrium Relfect's recovery disk using a DVD, then use the USB. With the USB you could drink a coffee, with the DVD you could drink coffee, have breakfast, shave, take a shower and then it just might be finishing up*Smile
