Windows 10 Will Kill The Installation DVD, Finally

    Hi there.

Can't understand why a USB install would be painfully slow -- Simple Physics should tell you that a ROTATING piece of media will always be slower at any sensible speed than Solid state media with no moving parts in it.

Even the POOREST quality USB stick will be a ;ot faster than a DVD. Create the install from an ISO image using RUFUS.

The only exception could be if you've still got some hideously overloaded USB ports (probably using an unpowered Hub) which is still running USB version 1 -- I think any computer made in the last 12 - 15 years will be using USB2 as a minimum. USB2 was released in 2000 so unless your machine is REALLY old it will certainly have USB 2 ports.

    Cheers

Installing from USB2 does seem slow these days, but to be honest, I don't even have an optical drive in my main PC. I put off buying one when I was building the machine and then there never was a need for it. That said, I always install a new OS on a PC that's disconnected from the Internet. Therefore I do need a physical media. I don't care whether it's a USB stick or a SD card, whether it comes by mail or by download, but I absolutely refuse to install the new OS while connected to any network.

  3. When W10 does the mandatory update are you going to pull the plug?

If the install media footprint keeps growing, eventually it isn't going to fit on your standard DVD anyway. Is Big Blue going to release Windows on BlueRay? *Zip I don't think so Tim. *Biggrin

  5. I know I'm going to regret asking this but pray tell why not? Your going to have too, if you want the free upgrade.

  7. I have a dedicated customized thumb drive for each of my PC's. My product code is entered automatically with a PID.txt file and I add OEM info for that PC that shows up on the system page. Last time I counted I had 24+ thumb drives on the go for various things.

I actually don't care for the free upgrade. I certainly won't do it come July 29. I will not do it at all if it won't be possible to do it with some sort of ISO.

What exactly is a mandatory update? If you're referring to the upgrade to 10, then I won't get it, I did not instal the "upgrade" apps. If you are talking about the usual Windows update, then I have it on manual, so the system does not download anything unless I say so.

The Win 10 EULA covering updates is one of the many reasons I will not continue with Win 10 past the 28th of July.

Setting regular updates to manual, may be thing of the past as MS declared. If one would go by recent experiences some updates may be dependent on previous ones, so if you miss one you may not get next one even if you wanted.
In the past, I always evaluated each update and installed it if it meets my criteria but in the future it may not be possible. I'm not going to miss opportunity to run W10 just because of that.
Ms provided all the updates to download and install in case it wouldn't pass thru WU and if that continues, you might be able to do it like that if and which you want.

Micro SD card would be best means for distributing SW.

Just food for thought: I have never forgotten a CD/DVD in my pocket, but I have washed an SD Card in the laundry*Sad
