My thoughts is that Mandatory updates will not last long things will change when M$ puts out one that hoses several million systems even M$ cannot stand the howling that will occur.

Which is all the more reason(forced updates) that they should include a system imager similar to the one in Win7, AND advertise it during the OOBE, instead of forcing everyone to resort to 3rd party software.

Clean installs will be doable, after you do the online upgrade.

  5. Those that stay in the Insider program, on the fast ring, get them first. Then Slow ring, then everybody else. That's my understanding anyway. By the time it gets to the non insiders there shouldn't be any big gotcha's.

I do and they are dime a dozen, some computers have them built in too. They are practical too, can be used in phones and other small devices and mailing them is easy and cheap. If windows become unified OS than you could update/upgrade all of them with only one storage media.

I've personally never had a problem with any update, but then again, I only install software I need(except for theming, that's software I WANT), and use what Microsoft has created for everything else.. the "gotcha's" are usually caused by 3rd party AV's or poorly written 3rd party software that doesn't place things where it should. So my opinion it's never really Microsoft's fault. But I did like the Win7 System Image creator, and never had a single problem reimaging with it, even when I had to first shrink the OS to from my old 5400rpm spinner to fit a SSD.

  9. I bought a couple of these, SD-MMC Card Reader - Raspberry Pi in Canada Simple and easy to use on my PC's that don't have a card reader. I can boot from a bootable SD Card inserted in this adapter. I bought it so I could image Micros SD cards for my Raspberry Pi but use them for a lot more than that. I have an SD to Micro SD adapter I use with it. If only my laptop could boot from its card reader.

  10. There was a rash of bad updates released a while back. Left a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouths. It made me leery for a while.

On both 7 and 8.1 during that time I never had a problem.

  12. I didn't either. Some of the botched updates were pulled before they got to me. Patch Tuesday almost always ended up being patch Wednesday for me. If I let it happen automatically it was usually Wednesday when I got the monthly updates.

Probably a good argument against forcing updates on Patch Tuesday and just let Microsoft's server and Widows take care of it.

  14. The "Defer Updates" option in 10 may be enough, if it carries over into the official release. Even a week delay may be enough if the patch gets pulled a day or two after patch Tuesday. If I get zapped once of twice and have to reinstall/reimage because of it, it won't be long before I roll back to 8.1. If it becomes a big news issue a couple of times Microsoft may have to reconsider it. Time will tell.

My main problem with the automatic updates is that they tend to pop up at arbitrary times. I have actually seen people starting to give a talk at a conference and then having to stop because the laptop decided to reboot to finish updates.

In fact, this has to do with my main issue with Windows automation: all kind of stuff is scheduled to be done when the pc is idle, but by idle they mean absence of user input. If I leave the pc to calculate something that takes few hours I have to think ahead and turn all that stuff off otherwise it will go into maintenance and then sleep.
