Windows 10: Windows 10 will no longer play .265 video files

Hi,

A few days ago I ran Windows Update manually and installed the (KB4598242) update and since then my computer will no longer play any .265 video content. Before the update everything worked fine but since then attempting to play any file of this format in either PotPlayer, MPC or Windows Media Player will result in audio only and a black screen in all applications. I have tried changing, at random the video decoder used in each but so far no changes from the black screen. A google search pointed me towards a thread from last year about installing something called "LAV Filters" but this also resulted in no change. The only other possible solution I have found but not acted on is "HEVC Video Extensions" in the Microsoft Store which costs money.

Wondering if anybody else is experiencing this issue or knows of any potential fixes other than paying in the store or rolling back the update.

H.265 Decoder not working in Windows 10?

I have a couple of H.265 encoded video files that work perfectly in the preview edition of Windows 10 but for some reason they refuse to play in the released version of Windows 10 (exact same pc). I get sound but not video. Was the H.265 decoder removed
from the final version?

 

Finding which videos in a directory of various videos are H.265?

It appears I need a new way to differentiate them, beside the 'Video compression' column.

 

No sound when playing video files on Windows 10

To have better clarity on the issue, please answer the below-listed questions and get back to us.

1. Are you aware of any changes made to this computer prior to the issue?
2. When do get the error "this app can't run on this computer"?
3. Is the sound working fine in Audio files?
4. What is the make and model number of your computer?
   
   5) What is the format of Video files that you are trying to play? (You may refer to
   File types supported by Windows Media Player).

Meanwhile, download a new video file from the internet and check if the audio is coming from that video file.

Also, copy those video files onto a USB and play them on another computer and check if you are able to hear audio from thos video files.

I suggest you to follow the troubleshooting steps mentioned in Fix sound problems in Windows 10 and check if this helps.
