Windows 10 Will Not Auto Sleep

I've seen lots of threads about similar issues here and I think I've tried everything I've read but nothing will make my PC sleep. It worked fine with Windows 8.1 but since 10 it doesn't matter what I change, the only way to make the PC sleep is to do it manually.

Here are some of the steps I've followed with no success:

    - powercfg /requests shows nothing
    - powercfg /energy doesn't show anything interesting
    - no media sharing is enabled
    - homegroup is disabled
    - disabling NIC has no effect
    - removing everything from the PC other than power and HDMI for video has no effect
    - everything but my mouse is set not to wake pc (I have also tried with the mouse also set to no avail)
    - updated drivers where possible

The weird thing is if I don't log onto the PC from a reboot, it will sleep just fine - the minute I log on it refuses to auto sleep. Also, if I boot into Safe Mode, the sleep works just fine again.

It's driving me crazy as combined with the auto setting for windows update (despite having disable wake timers selected) the PC will sometimes wake in the middle of the night and stay on until I sleep it again.

A guy here at Reddit has the same issue, but the thread isn't seeing much activity:
My self-built Windows 10 PC will not automatically go to sleep under any condition : techsupport

Happy to answer questions about my setup or try suggestions.

    Thanks in advance!

    :)

Windows 10 Will Not Auto Sleep

    Hi Sootie,
Dont know what your specs are, helps if you put them in.

I have seen a number of threads concerning this,
And the most common repair that ive seen is that in W8 upwards the major makers, Dell/HPAsus/Acer etc have all updated their system BIOS to correct this problem.
    So is yours upto date

Hi and thanks for the reply.

    System specs are:

    Custom PC
    Intel i5 3570k @ 3.8ghz
    16GB RAM
    Gigabyte MB
    AMD Radeon HD 7850
    128GB SSD OS Drive
    1.8TB WD Data Drive

When I first installed W10 had a strange LAN disconnecting issue from the on board LAN so updated the BIOS which ended up invalidating the W10 activation so I had to install again. At least I'm running the latest BIOS now.

I am having the same exact problem after upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10.
What is really frustrating is that I thought I had it fixed after doing a clean boot, Un-checking the wake up items in the power mgmnt section. and disabling all of the start up apps. I also went in and tweaked the Bios. It was working, To test it I had it set at monitor off after 1 min and sleep after 2 min. After testing it for awhile with it doing what it was supposed to I started enabling things gradually to see if I could narrow it down to what was keeping it awake before.

I still had it going to sleep after setting things back to normal with a normal boot and startup items re-enabled. Then later that day it stopped working. Stopped going into sleep. Seems to be a random event. Now, after trying to get back to where it would sleep again it absolutely refuses no matter what I do. So here I am. I even updated the chipset drivers with no effect. . I am thoroughly disgusted with Windows 10 because of this stupid glitch.

  8. Windows 10 Will Not Auto Sleep

--Same here for most of this, system will not sleep on it's schedule I have set, though I can manually put it into sleep mode and it will not wake until I prompt it with a keyboard click or mouse movement.

So, 'sleep' works, but only manually and not on the timers.

    Thanks!

The fix for mine was unplugging my Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick from the USB port.
It goes to sleep just fine now.

So you should look for what is started at logon. A good utility is this; Autoruns for Windows

Glad this is fixed for you but as stated in my opening post - disconnecting all hardware other than the HDMI and power lead was one of the first things I tried with no success.

This was my first thought when I discovered that Safe Mode did not exhibit the same issue. Pretty sure I've either uninstalled or disabled everything that is set to auto start for Windows but admittedly I've been using the built in task manager for Windows 10 which allows you to do this - perhaps this utility will show something I've missed. Will take a look as soon as I get chance.

I wouldn't mind the fact it doesn't auto sleep so much if the damned Windows Update settings would honor the 'Disable Wake Timers' option and stop waking the PC up in the middle of the night to update and reboot.

Yes I've disabled the auto maintenance
Yes I've edited the task in task scheduled to wake the PC for the reboot but as I'm sure many of you know by now, when Windows re-creates the task when updates are due - it turns the settings back on again

    Frustrating *Smile

Hi, I was reading a few things on this- maybe something here will give you another idea- sorry of you've already covered all this.
    Check your ethernet connection properties.

    Update BIOS

How to read Wake Source Log (Event Viewer)

    Commands

Clearly that sleep works in safe mode is a big clue. Does it if you do a clean boot?
Else look at drivers loaded- Autoruns can help here.
Driver incompatibility - perhaps need to use an older driver/wait for update - but you need to identify which one.
Scheduled tasks can be set to wake the PC. (? how do you search scheduled tasks for those that are set to do so?)

Windows 10 Will Not Auto Sleep

Thanks for taking the time to reply but unfortunately I've already tried everything listed.

I can confirm however that whilst a Safe Mode boot gets power management working again, a clean boot does not. Shutting all startup programs down, along with disabling all non MS services yields the same result - no sleep.

I'll take a look with Autoruns and see if I can narrow things down further.

Something that is very interesting is that whenever the PC is at the Windows Logon screen waiting for a password it will sleep just fine regardless of the mode.

If I boot into Safe mode power management works fine, however if I boot into Safe mode with Network support it again stops working.

I've been into BIOS and disabled the NIC to try and isolate it as a cause, but it has no effect.

Hi, assuming that it's something to do with a driver, (perhaps a big assumption) but you've narrowed things down a lot, try to determine which drivers are active when you are in Safe Mode with Networking compared with Safe Mode. Then disable drivers selectively, and retry.

    I think this will help:
    DriverView: Loaded Windows Drivers List

So if you run that in both SMode and SMode with N, and compare, you should be able to work out the difference.
Then disable 1 or more of the drivers running additionally in SMode with N at a time, reboot to SMode with N and retest.

Maybe- never tried anything like that! Good luck.

    You
