Windows 10: Windows 10 Will Not Play AVI Files

Just purchased a new HP Windows 10 laptop and finished transferring files from my old Windows 7 Asus. After the transfer I discovered that all video with MP4 and MOV extensions play correctly but the videos with AVI extensions do not play. The AVI files did play correctly on the older Windows 7 system.


This is a problem because the software for our Q-SEE security cameras only save cropped video in AVI or DAT extensions. We have a number of cropped videos that are needed for pending legal cases that will not play on my new laptop.


Is there a way that within Windows 10 Media Player, or other installed software, that it can be configured to play AVI files? Other than the OEM installed programs I also have Office Home and Student addition and not much more.


Or..... in Windows 10 can the existing AVI files be converted MP4 formats?

Play an incomplete avi file?

divfix might be able to help, if not, and VLC and the other suggestions don't work it might just be impossible for your files. Are you sure they're avi files for example, check them out with g-spot. Sometimes funny people rename rar files to avi and such.

 

AVI file will not play on Windows

I have an AVI file that was recorded on a Suntek HC-300A wildlife camera 1080P that won't play on the Windows PC. Everytime I try to play it on a Windows PC I get an error of some sort.

Other AVI files copied from the same camera on to the same PC will play okay.

The AVI file will play okay on the Suntek wildlife camera.

The AVI file will not play on windows. I have copied the file from the memory card on to the computer harddisk, tried playing from the memory card plugged into a card reader, and tried playing from the memory card with the camera plugged into the computer.
It will always fail.

I've tried the Windows 10 video player, Apple Quicktime, and Sony Play Memories. All fail just on this one particular avi file, but never on any of the other avi files.

If the avi didn't play correctly on the camera I'd just assume it had been corrupted when it was created, but the camera plays the file okay which is interesting, and confusing.

There could be a number of factors as to why you are having issues playing .avi file in Windows 10. It could be caused by corrupted system file or an issue with the file itself.

I would like to know more about your concern. Kindly answer the following questions:

• Are you experiencing this issue only when playing the .avi files?
  
• Have you tried playing another video file? If so, are you encountering the same issue?
  
• Have you tried playing the .avi file on another video player application?
  
• What is the exact error message that you are getting when playing the .avi file?
