Windows 10: Windows 10 wont boot, or it gets stuck, wont update, just resets

Was not simple trying to clarify my problem in a small title. My online classes begin in 5 days, I am desperate here! Here we go. 2 days ago I tried to import pics from my phone to laptop. I have had this laptop only for 3-4 months, and just mainly used it for school. Before halfway through the importing of pics process it rejects my phone, and will no longer recognize it (Samsung Galaxy S5 active btw). I did so much research, and tried so many usb settings tweeks, but nothing. It hates my phone for some reason.

Then at a point during all that, I reset my laptop and it just gets stuck with black screen and circle bubbles. Doing all the things you can think of on google, so many searches. It goes from that to getting stuck on welcome screen, then doing more work and searching, I get it to go to my desktop, but its only a black screen with mouse cursor. Before this point I couldn't even get it to boot through safe mode, it would get stuck. I can get safe mode now, but wont let me access any setting or options, no control panel. Not even start menu! I could only get into task and device managers. At that point I saw "!"s on my display adapters, video card, network card, and a couple of other visual type devices. Tried to uninstall, reinstall drivers, nothing. I've done so many things to resolve this, but ask if I've done it anyway, please. Before I left for work earlier, I just gave up. I started the reformat process from the reset pc setting. After it finished I put in my time zone info in, with all the date and time settings already in place. But it wont connect to wifi, or wired. With it wired, it tries for longer, then the laptop just resets and it goes back to the date and time settings page again. I'm sorry if this is too long, I have been at this for 2 days like I said. I'm sure there are things I'm forgetting to mention, so any questions just ask away.

stuck at just a moment

Ok,

So Ive had windows 10 for a few months now. My computer was updating last night and got stuck at just a moment screen. I have restarted my computer several different times, and have taken the battery out and everytime it goes to boot up it gets stuck a just
a moment and wont even let me get to the log on screen. Please help!!!!

 

It's a surprise that you have not returned the computer already.
Since you just formatted I will assume you have no important files that need to be saved.
With that understanding you are under time pressure to get your computer ready for school.
A clean install will be the most efficient way for you to have a working computer.

1) find a flash drive that you can format
2) create a bootable windows 10 iso:
Download Windows 10
3) insert the bootable windows 10 iso into any USB port
4) power on the computer clicking the applicable F key or change the bios boot order so that the USB port and drive are on the top of the list:
List of PC brands with their corresponding hot-keys
5) once the iso loads click install to start the clean install steps:

6) delete partitions, format the drive, make an unallocated drive and install windows 10 version 1703
7) perform windows updates
8) you should be good to go with a clean installation.

 

Note that will wipe any personal data and settings on your PC, so before doing that, I suggest you take steps to copy any required data you need from your laptop that isn't already backed up.

You can do that by booting your laptop from an external bootable disk (HDD or flash drive- even a DVD). You get get one (Kyhi's boot disk) from the top of the Software and Apps section here.

I also recommend you boot from that disk and run HDDTune to check the disk in your PC.

In future, to avoid this sort of stressful panic, start using disk imaging routinely as we recommend again and again- this means you can restore Windows/disks/partitions to a previous functional state from your disk images, stored on an eternal medium, quickly and without the need for technical help.

Even if your disk fails, you can then get a new one, restore appropriate images, and get your PC up and running again.

E,g. Macrium Reflect (free) + its boot medium + external storage for disk image sets. Very well supported with help and videos.

 

Thank you. I had gotten the files that I wanted to keep during that short time I was able to get in through safe mode. So files aren't a concern for me, even before formatting. I have tried all this once, early on. I will do it again, seeing as doing things more than once sometimes helps, and it gets a little better. Like I just reset pc and delete files... again. But now I can get my wifi to connect. After connectong, it tells me "hi" and tries to get updates. That's farther than it was before. But it still resets before doing anything else. I got my laptop from newegg, I'll have to get the papers to see if it came with any kind of warranty to return it.

 

A clean install is different than "reset this PC". The built-in Windows 10 reset function has proven to be very unreliable. For one reason, it uses files on the hard drive to do the reset with. The clean install done by booting from the USB flash drive uses the files on the flash drive to re-install Windows with.

Also, to increase the chances of the clean install being successful:

Disconnect everything from the computer not needed for the install. Laptops that means pretty much nothing connected to it except for the power cord (and the flash drive you are installing Windows from).

Delete every partition on the hard drive and select the unallocated space and click next to let Windows set up the drive the way it wants.

Do not connect to the internet until the install is finished and you have a local account established on the computer. This means do not connect an Ethernet cable, and do not let it connect to any WiFi Hotspots.

Create the first account on the computer as a local account. When you get to the screens asking for emails and passwords, look for the way to skip it. Once you get to the screen that you can no longer skip, that is where you put in a username that you want your folder named under "Users", should be two blocks for a password and verification, and a password hint. That will set up the local account.

After you get logged in, and everything settles down, that's when you will want to connect to the internet, via Ethernet LAN cable is preferred, and let it look for drivers for the rest of the hardware that might not be installed and updates.

 

Thank you NavyLCDR! I was in the process of of getting the USB ready when you posted. I went ahead and did the entire install from another guide, but the 2nd half of your post was very helpful. Nowhere did I have people mention the procedure during the windows settings or account setup.

 

Once you have windows installed with an internet connection please perform some tests to check the integrity of the operating system and check some of the computer hardware so that you have a baseline.

This is a log collector that we use in the bsod forum and it will collect in addition to any bsod files the msinfo32, dxdiag, event log etc. We can troubleshoot the logs.

Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
1) sfc /scannow (should take 5 to 10 minutes to complete)
2) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth (should take 5 to 10 minutes to complete)
3) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread
4) chkdsk /x /f /r
The chkdsk may take many hours to complete so plan to run it overnight.
5) post the chkdsk results into the thread using the information in this link:

6) run one of the SMART tests on your drives: (free editions)

When the SMART test has completed open the Microsoft snipping tool and make images of the results to post into the thread.

For the drive
check the health,scan for errors, no quick scan but full scanrun a benchmark.


If all of the above steps are OK plan the following steps:
1) create a brand new restore point
2) create a backup image using Macrium:
Macrium Software | Your Image is Everything
3) save the macrium image to another drive or to the cloud
4) update the macrium once per month or more frequently so that you have a backup plan for any unexpected malware or hardware problems.
