Windows 10 won't recognize Toshiba External Hard Drive. Please Help!
1 Toshiba "Canvio" 320 Gig HD, only 5 years old works *FINE* with old XP laptop


2 New Windows 10 Laptop doesn't recognize the HD in ANY way


- Does not "ka-dunk" when attached

- Not seen in Device Manager

- Not seen in Disk Manager


3 ALL USB ports on Dell Laptop will power the drive and it lights up.


4 Can't find Windows 10 driver for Toshiba "HDTB103XK3AA" on Toshiba Website


5 Can't find Windows 10 driver for Toshiba "HDTB103XK3AA" on Microsoft Website


6 Can't find Windows 10 driver for Toshiba "HDTB103XK3AA" on DELL Website

7 Did find this P/N on a Driver update utility website which claimed to offer it for download, but just got a generic driver updater utility with monthly fee :

Questions:


1 Is there a windows 10 driver for it?


2 If not is there some way to emulate an XP connection on the new w10 machine?


3 Is there some way to connect the old XP machine directly to the new W10 machine and "daisy-chain" the data from the HD through the old machine to the new machine?


4 Grateful for any other suggestions

I understand that the external hard drive is not recognized by the PC. I appreciate your efforts in trying to resolve the issue.
It would be great if you can answer these questions to assist you in a better way.

• Did you try connecting the Hardrive to different USB Port?
  
• Does the Hardrive get detected if you try connecting it to a different PC?
  
• Are you aware of any changes made to the computer recently?
  

I suggest you refer and follow the steps mentioned in the KB article and check if that resolves the issueError:
“USB Device not recognized” when you try to access a USB external hard drive

Note: Ignore method 2 & 5 from the above article.

Thanks for the update.

• What is the make and model of the PC?
  

I suggest you follow the below given suggestions

Method 1:
Disable Fast Startup

1. Press Windows + R, to open
   Run dialog box.
   
2. Type control and click on
   OK.
   
3. Click on Power Options.
   
4. Click on Choose what the power buttons do, and click
   Change settings that are currently unavailable.
   
5. Uncheck the box of Turn on fast startup.
   
6. Click Save changes.
   

Method 2: Uninstall all the Unknown USB Drivers

1. Attach your Toshiba external hard drive if not connected.
   
2. Press Windows key + R. This will open
   Run.
   
3. In Run dialog box, type
   devmgmt.msc and hit enter.
   
4. Now expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
   
5. Now right click on the
   Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed) and choose the
   Uninstall and restart the PC.

Hello zbook
#1) I have tested the external drives in three different computers, win10 pro, Win10, and XP. The results are identical. When I plug in the external hard drive windows signals a new device with an audio signal and the light comes on on the external drive. The results on all three pc's is identical in disk manager, file explorer and device manager.
#2) I have tried all solutions presented to me by FreeBooter, from the simplest solution of uninstalling the external drive in device manager and rebooting windows, to using the various third party software that was suggested, obviously with out success.
#3) The attached screen shots will only show one of the drives attached because I don't have enough free USB ports to attach two drives and I didn't think it would have been a good idea to use a hub.
#4) one strange thing about one of the drives is that now device manager lists it as a Toshiba drive although it is a Western Digital.
#5) Sorry but I have no way of getting a photo of BIOS
