Windows 10 won't stay asleep, hibernate, or shutdown, tried everything

Hello, I am new to posting on these forums but I have been reading them for a bit. I appear to be having the problem with windows 10 that prevents windows from staying asleep. To be more specific every time I shutdown, go into hibernate, or go to sleep, the computer only briefly turns off and then turns itself back on immediately. Worse is that I had fixed this problem previously and it worked fine for 2 weeks and then randomly yesterday it started doing it again. I didn't update any drivers or anything that I know of in the mean time. I have tried every single thing that has been recommended on the forums that I can tell and nothing seems to fix it. I have tried disabling fastboot, disabling the intel management engine, updated all of my drivers and bios, wake alarms are all off, there are 0 items in powercfg that are allowed to wake the computer, lastwake shows literally nothing woke the computer up, and also tried about a million other things that have been recommended on this forum and to no avail. My laptop is a dell xps 13, the new refresh from the end of last year.

    Edit:
Solved - Hope this helps someone maybe so I'm keeping it here, the fastboot issue was the problem, but it wasn't what I thought. For disabling fastboot under the power options to work, you have to make sure it is ENABLED in the bios. I had disabled it in the bios 2 weeks ago and that is what fixed it initially. So when I disabled it in the power options I went back in and enabled it in the bios and the computer works again. Hope maybe this helps someone. 3 hours later and the fix is that stupid, hope I didn't waste anyone's time.

    :)

After windows 10 update, sleep, hibernate and shutdown not working correctly

Have similar problem. With Windows 7 on my HP laptop didn't have any issues with sleep or hibernate function.

Did the free upgrade to Windows 10 and now have problems with both. Laptop won't stay asleep or even in hibernate mode. It keeps coming back after only few seconds. Most of the advice I have seen is useless in my situation.

Bottom line at this point everything is set to default and it keeps on happening.

It's driving me up the wall since the laptop is on a desk near my bed.

    Microsoft please help!

  3. Hiberfil.sys Missing, Boot and Hibernation Issues

Hi, I'm currently using the Alienware 14 laptop on Windows 10. Everything was fine up after the upgrade up until now. Some days ago I noticed that after a proper shutdown my computer will not start anymore. It would just stay at the Alienware logo and
won't display the loading circle. It would start again after a force shut down. I figured that it was problems with the hiberfil.sys, so i disabled hibernation, fast boot, etc. I did a couple of reboots, shutdowns and turn ons and the laptop seems to work
fine. After re-enabling those settings again the problem returned. Laptop won't resume from hibernation or shutdown unless it was force-shutdowned. The hyberfil.sys is missing from the C: drive even after I enabled hidden files in folder settings. Please help
    and thank you!

I haven't touched the BIOS setting, ever. My four pc's have all developed inability to stay in hibernate until I restart the pc manually; sometimes they wake in a few minutes, sometimes a few hours. This problem started with my 8.1 (but only after 1 year), continued after upgrade to 10 on same pc; even after disabling usb devices, network devices from waking up pc, it continues to wake from hibernate when I don't want it to. through cmd I see that this PC has an awake timer set,

Reason: Windows will execute 'NT TASK\Remediation\AntimalwareMigrationTask' scheduled task that requested waking the computer.
I've already disabled in powercfg all timers ability to wake the pc; yet it continues. Please advise?

I changed from Norton 360, to McAfee full Protection in January 2016. Then I just upgraded to 10 last week. This problem developed a few months ago; did not exist for the first year of the pc with 8.1.
I've had this hibernate failure problem develop over time on four different pc's recently.

    • On a third pc that we bought with windows 10, I have successfully corrected this same problem by disabling wake on devices, and disabling wake in powercfg (this was the exception pc; it had the problem from day 1 in December).
    • On a fourth pc with windows 7, upgrading to 10 actually stopped this same problem without any other intervention.
    • But I have a windows 7, and an 8.1, that both developed this problem few months ago before upgrading both to 10 last week; haven't been able to solve.
    Thanks for any help!

It sounds to me like you've covered just about everything. That's very strange indeed. The only other thing I can think of is that WOL (Wake-On-Lan) is enabled in the BIOS, and something is sending Magic Packets to wake them up. Sorry I can't be of more help. *Sad

Windows 10 won't stay asleep, hibernate, or shutdown, tried everything

I don't feel more comfortable than simrick with this, but maybe some information can be found in the "System" log. When the system wakes up, the reason is written there from the "Power-Troubleshooter" source. Well at least it may be there...

Maybe there's a program that enables back what you disabled...

Just a thought: Did you use the Norton Removal Tool when you uninstalled? That Remediation task is related to Norton. You should be able to disable the task.
Cant get rid of splash screen re Windows 10 | Norton Community
    See post from SLSALES.

Edit: I also found this problem with a version of Teamviewer on one of my systems.

  10. I'm having the same problem with my Dell XPS 13, but I can't figure out where the fastboot option is in the Dell Bios. Any help? Thanks,

I don't know about the BIOS fast boot option, but there's the Windows fast boot option (or more accurately fast startup) which is another matter. I found it to be more a source of problems than anything else.

Truth is I have an SSD, in which case the option loses its appeal, but even in an non-SSD situation I would likely have it disabled.

Chances are, in a locked-down OEM BIOS, you won't have a Fast Boot option. That is mostly found in motherboards purchased for building your own system. The Fast Startup function in Windows is probably best turned off for most people.

Fast Startup - Turn On or Off in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums

To understand what this is/does (it was first introduced in Windows 8):
“Fast Startup (aka: hybrid boot or hybrid Shutdown) is a new feature in Windows 8 to help your PC start up faster after shutting down. When turned on, Windows 8 does this by using a hybrid shutdown (a partial hibernate) method that saves only the kernel session and device drivers (system information) to the hibernate (hiberfil.sys) file on disk instead of closing it when you shut down your PC. This also makes the hiberfil.sys file to be much smaller than what hibernate would use (often 4GB or more). When you start your PC again, Windows 8 uses that saved system information to resume your system instead of having to do a cold boot to fully restart it. Using this technique with boot gives a significant advantage for boot times, since reading the hiberfile in and reinitializing drivers is much faster on most systems (30-70% faster on most systems tested). If you have a motherboard with UEFI, then fast startup will be even faster.”

Windows 10 won't stay asleep, hibernate, or shutdown, tried everything

This is what worked for me:
Disconnect AC power plug from the computer (mine is a laptop).
Hold the on/off button down for a full 60 seconds.
    Release the on/off button.
    Reconnect the AC power plug.
Depress the on/off button to restart the computer.

It is the same procedure for when your computer will not turn on.

So far, so good for me. Hope it helps others.
