  1. Windows 10 won't update after installing Office 2016 and Visual Studio

So, I recently installed Office 2016 and Visual Studio Enterprise 2017, which I need for work and school. Before this I had just installed the Creators Update a few days ago and all is working fine. I searched for updates today, a bunch came up for Office but none for VS. Now, over 3 hours later, it's still at 0% downloaded. I would estimate the download size to be around 1GB, but checking C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution (where Windows stores updates) only shows around 80MB used space. I checked several times and it hasn't really increased. Task Manager shows virtually 0% network usage, a bit here and there, but very sporadic and nothing big. I have access to a business class fiber optics connection here at my business, so speed/bandwidth isn't the issue. I do have a firewall but I have downloaded updates here before on both my business and personal machines. This is my personal laptop running Windows 10 Enterprise.

Disk checks on all partitions reveal no errors and sfc /scannow comes up clean. I've tried deleting the contents of my user and system temp folders, as well as force-stopping the Windows Update service and cleaning its' folder. I've also ran Disk Cleanup.

What could be going on here? Thanks!

    :)

  2. Windows 10: Start > Search Application by Typing does not applications listed in Start Menu (such as Outlook, Excel, ...)

Windows 10 is Version 1703 (OS Build 1506.250) Office is v 2016 MSO 16.0.8067.2032 and both have no pending updates.

The problem not only occurs with Office applications, but ANY desktop application installed (as I said.. Visual Studio, VMware Workstation.. Visual Studio Code, Acrobat.. etc etc etc) - none of them are 'found' when typing their name(s).

  3. Windows UPDATE

    Same things same event log

Product: Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime (x64) -- A later version of Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime (x64) is already installed.

as i understand it i have visual studio 2015 installed and i am receiving updates for visual studio 2010 which of course is wrong since the later version of these tools for office run time is probably already installed ?

Please note that i installed Visual studio 2010 after visual studio 2015 in my pc , and please don't tell me remove vs 15 and 10 and install in proper order , coz that's gonna a big problem Windows 10 won't update after installing Office 2016 and Visual Studio :)

  4. Windows 10 won't update after installing Office 2016 and Visual Studio

    Hi AnonVendetta.

Try running the Windows Update trouble shooter. You will find in Settings, Update and Security, fourth one down list.

  5. Thanks for the suggestion, I'm giving this another go now. I've been busy the past day or so, updates havent been my highest priority, as long as I'm recently up to date and the OS works then there is no need to have absolute latest everything. I usually disable the WU service so it can't update in the background unless I allow it. The troubleshooter found 3 things:

    1. Windows Update database error
    2. Windows Update components must be repaired
    3. Check for pending updates

I did make one change to my setup, I uninstalled Office 2016, then installed only Outlook 2013 from my 2013 ISO. Then I reinstalled Office 2016 but left Outlook 2016 unchecked. I need Outlook 2013 specifically because the Business Contact Manager isn't compatible with the 2016 version. It looks like I can have the best of both worlds this way.

I'll report back to say if everything went fine.

This is my personal laptop that I use for business, school, and gaming. It needs to run 10 because the i7 Kabylake CPU officially only supports 10, and the latest DirectX 12 games requires 10. The drivers for 7 also are not available for all my hardware components. On a side note, I'm going to hold off on upgrading my business machines from 7 to 10, 10 has gotten better but it's not as reliable as 7. 10's auto updates thing also puts me off a bit, other than that it runs good usually. 7 runs fine on those machines, I see no need to change their setup for now, at least until 7 is still covered by the extended timeframe.

  6. Still a no go even after running the troubleshooter. I started trying to update over 2 hrs ago, Windows Update was at 90ish MB. Now it's at only 105MB and still says 0%. Clearly, nothing is downloading. This is frustrating, exactly why I don't entirely trust MS, since it seems they can't even be relied upon to update the OS.

  7. If you note the update (KB ) number you can manually download from the Microsoft catalog.

When going this route I stop the Windows Update service and BITS. Then execute the download, complete the install and reboot.

It would be interesting to understand is this an Office update that it is being cranky with or an OS update.

One route around this could very well be an in place upgrade. That will take you to the Creator release which has its risks. Lots of people are using but MS is staging the roll out and dealing with issues. If your device is newer the risks are reduced, if you have a lot of complex stuff going on in my opinion the risks increases.

I updated seven machines, one I had to do a clean install on, the others went no issues.
