Windows 10: Windows 10 & XP dual boot. Best way?

Before my 1st post in this thread, I read the thread and didn't see a explanation why virtualization won't/doesn't work. So I ask again, why can't you run whatever you want/need to run in XP via virtualization (Hyper-V or VirtualBox).

I guess my point didn't come through last time. It doesn't make sense (I could say non-sensical, nonsense, silly, stupid, you can pick) to dual-boot W10/WXP if you haven't tried virtualization 1st. And from what you've written so far, you haven't tried virtualization first and are snide and rude to those who are trying to suggest it and help.

Nothing snide or rude there. It was perfectly polite, with a 'please' and a 'thanks' and a smile emoticon at the end so that folks would realise the fact. I am always grateful for people's replies and always careful to say so. If you really don't like me, and think I am rude or snide, please just refrain from trying to help me... 'cos I am not at all like you accuse me of being.

I have said a number of times (if you really read what folks write here, rather than trying to score "I am holier than thou" points off me) that I will try the virtual route. The funny thing is, the very last thing I wrote was "I may well stick with Windows 7 and try to install XP via VM with that".. Sorry, but you clearly aren't reading what is already written here before replying.

 

One thing (I have only browsed the use manual for VM Player briefly so far) - when you install new software, how do you choose whether it goes into the host or the 'guest' O/S? Thanks.

 

If you install software from within the VM, it will be installed on the VM. If you install it from within the Host, it will install on the host. I hope I made myself clear. If not, please ask again.

 

I think that is clear! Thanks. I'll give it a go as soon as I can. Now I have decided to keep Windows 7 Home Premium rather than go over to a version of Windows 10 other than 'pro', I can install and try out VMware Player far sooner...

just remember when you allocate resources to the virtual machine, it takes it away from the host. The more resources you give it, the better it will perform. However, you can't give it so many resources that the Host machine will suffer a lot.

I haven't watched it through yet (saved it to my hard drive) - I guess the same procedure is basically OK for Windows 7. (Of course, I am an 'intruder' here now, as I am not going to change from Win7 to Win10 - unless I decide to pay the $99 upgrade to the pro version, which is unlikely I think - but I won't start this topic over on the Windows 87 forum; there will be lots of threads there already no doubt).

You can't see the upgrade to 10 from 7 Home Premium to 10 Pro! You will have to go back and get the 10 Home edition! From there you can see the upgrade take place. Once that is seen to you can easily set up a 10/7 dual boot and run the XP Mode on the 7 install as outlined on the other thread or see XP Pro x64 on the second drive as we discussed earlier.

The latest VM Workstation 12 Player will be seen as VM Player 12.exe once on the drive for the free to use at home download. The latest offering from Oracle in Virtual Box 5.0.2 will also run the XP Mode there since you won't have 10 Pro with Hyper-V as an option. But seeing the XP Mode connect online to activate for the three month period will be necessity regardless of the VM option you go with. The alternate we discussed was seeing XP set up on a second drive as a stand alone or see the dual boot of 10 and 7 across two drives with the XP Mode in use on the 7 install. Since Asus still carries the 64bit drivers for the board your only problem will be with the printer as far as driver support for the newer model if not seeing XP as a guest OS.

Plus a certain poster is saying having any dual boot, as opposed to VM, is "non-sensical, nonsense, silly, stupid". The lady doth protest too much methinks, but I did want to give the VM option a try first.

I am seriously wondering, having considered all the information people have posted, whether I'd be better forgetting all about Win10, ditching Win7 and having a single O/S, WinXP, on the PC. That would serve all my needs, frankly! Apart from my curiosity about Windows 10.

 

My Personal Opinion XP was great for it's time. It is unsupported now and, in my opinion, too dangerous to be out on the Web. Windows 7 is a great OS, and frankly my favorite. It is till supported, but for only 4 or 5 more years. Then it will be where XP is now. So, eventually, you are going to have to make a move.

You can do a bare metal install of as many OS' as you want, without dual booting, as long as you put them on separate hard drives. Just disconnect 1 wire from every hard drive except the one you are going to install on. Do the install, then when it is finished, plug the other hard drives back in. Use your one time boot menu key to select which hard drive to boot from or do nothing and it will boot into the OS set up in BIOS. After the install, you will have to go into bios and set your boot order. But, VMs are too easy.

 

Well this is why I had suggested trying out the 32bit side of 7 to see if the old XP version for Sibelus would run on the 32bit side of 7 rather then the XP Mode or have the 32bit 7 and run the 32bit XP Mode on a separate drive as another venture since your main goal is to get the Sibelus app running not which OS it is being run on. The VM too often is a temp solution to a lasting problem of incompatibility otherwise.

 

The Sibelius version I have (3.0) won't run in any version of Windows 7, only XP (32- or 64-bit) or earlier. I don't want to upgrade the software now...

To be honest, the fact that XP isn't supported any longer doesn't worry me. Why is it 'dangerous'? What's the worst that can happen? I am very careful (I shouldn't tempt fate here, but...) and have not even had a single virus on any of my PCs for over 5 years! Firewalls and anti-virus programmes protect my XP PC, I use Mailwasher Pro to filter my emails before I even download them, I back up images of the C drive every few weeks - and in any case, there's no sensitive data on the XP PC - hackers are welcome to whatever they can find to be honest! OK, there are denial of service attacks and what have you, but frankly the risk is quite low, I feel. Not enough to reject using XP anyway - tens if not hundreds of thousands of businesses still rely on it to this day, after all. (If I am being naive here, someone will of course jump in and let me know!!).

Yes, I know the above is not ideal, and I am in part being devil's advocate, but I wouldn't not use XP just because Microsoft withdrew support. The same may go, possibly, for Windows 7, when the time comes. I also need Outlook Express on the PC (as my elderly mother will use it too), as I said. I know you can get Outlook Express for Windows 7, but that still leaves the Sibelius issue if I don't have XP in any guise.

No idea now what I will do! I am back to square one (though much better informed!). As the PC will be 'spare', once my new one is delivered, I can experiment on it to my heart's content: I can try dual booting, the VM route, or just one O/S. What I won't do in the end is 'upgrade' my Windows 7 Home Premium to Windows 10, as I will only ever install the Pro version of the latter. I might even buy the upgrade to Win10 Pro at some stage over the next year, we'll see. It's offered here in Sri Lanka for peanuts, but they are not genuine Microsoft discs of course. Pirate heaven here, with malls full of pirated software.. I must say, I have been good and not indulged!!
