  1. Windows 10240 Disk Cleanup Won't Delete Windows.old

I just installed the latest build and as I have a rather small drive c: I wanted to delete the Windows.old files. I, had two of them. Disk Cleanup deleted Windows.old but left Windows.old(1). Not much left inside that Windows.old(1) folder but I can't delete it. Any suggestions other than a clean install?

    :)

Should I clean out my "Legacy system Windows.Old files"?

    Hi,

Your personal files are temporarily saved to the Windows.old folder. Deleting the Windows.old folder can’t be undone. If you delete the
Windows.old folder, you wont be able to go back to Previous operating system.

For more information about Windows.old folder, you may refer to this link:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/how-remove-windows-old-folder

Note: This applies to Windows 10 as well.

If you want to delete the Windows.old folder, you can perform disk cleanup.

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/...nup#delete-files-using-disk-cleanup=windows-8

Note: This applies to Windows 10 as well.

    Hope this is useful.

    About Windows Update

Hi Skelton0786, the Windows.old folder is the one to delete, though you won't be able to delete it manually . . .

Check in C:\Windows'old\Users for any of your files before deleting it . . .

    Open File Explorer

    Click on your hard drive

On the Manage Tab, click Cleanup

Let Disk Cleanup do its initial scan

Select Everything in the list and choose Delete

    Start Disk Cleanup again

Let Disk Cleanup do its initial scan

This time in the resulting dialog, click 'Cleanup System Files'

Let Disk Cleanup run another scan

Select Everything in the list and choose Delete

    Windows 10240 Disk Cleanup Won't Delete Windows.old

    What file is in it?

I have an Asus motherboard and with every update, the Asus AMD00 device is pointing to the device driver in windows.old, so I can't delete it. I have to uninstall the device, set the owner and permissions on windows.old so I can delete it, then after I have deleted it, use the device manager to search for an update of the device,

It is probably something like that.

Try using Ccleaner. It's free. In the advanced section there will be an option to remove the Windows old installation. Just mark it, analyse and remove

  7. The last empty folder has something to with the Skydrive. When I try to delete it I am told I need permission from a Trusted Installer. Maybe I need to uninstall Office 2016? I may give that a try.

Thanks, I tried that option, RD /S /Q "D:\Windows.old(1)" and I got back, The Directory Is Not Empty. I know it contains another folder that is empty. I may have to brush up on my DOS. *Sad

  9. Using the Command Prompt I discovered that I still have a SkyDrive and OneDrive folder, both not empty. When I use the Windows File Explorer there is no SkyDrive and it is not hidden.

I am getting closer to restoring my Windows 8.1 Pro. *Sad

Disk Cleanup would not remove Windows.old on my Windows 10 10240 either. Because I am dual booting with Windows 8.1, I just deleted the folder in Windows 10 10240 from my Windows 8.1 File Explorer

  11. I am not dual booting, but I can use easily pull out the laptop SSD and connect it to my desktop with Window 8.1 Pro and then use the file explorer to try and delete it.

  12. I tried that but same problem, Microsoft claims I am not a trusted installer! My old hard drive with Windows 8.1 Pro is going back into the laptop and then this SSD will be formatted. If that does not get rid of my Windows.old(1), I will install Linux.

There comes a point when all the Microsoft security stuff becomes overbearing and you have to tell them to stuff it. *Rolleyes

Format still worked *Party Only 135 updates and then cloning to the SSD. I'm back to Windows 8.1 Pro and I think will enjoy it until July 29th.

Now, where is that Windows 10 invitation? *Wink

    I'd try this:

    1. Take ownership of the folder
    2. Set full control to your account
    3. Rename the folder
    4. Log off / Log in
    5. Try to delete
