Windows 10’s latest cumulative update fixes the Windows Media Player

The new Windows 10 cumulative updates are available for the general public with tons of security and non-security fixes. This release also fixes the Windows Media Player issue that was reported by users last month.

Windows Media Player is still part of the operating system and the company currently has no plans to deprecate the legacy media player.

In the changelog of the latest Windows 10 cumulative updates, Microsoft revealed that they have fixed the broken Seek Bar feature of Windows Media Player. “Addresses an issue that may prevent the use of the Seek Bar in Windows Media Player when playing specific files. This issue does not affect normal playback,” Microsoft explains.

With Windows 10, Microsoft unveiled a modern solution for viewing media content. Movies & TV UWP app that comes pre-installed on the operating system is quite a decent alternative to Windows Media Player but it still needs some minor improvements.

Users have plenty of alternatives to choose from. One of the best alternatives to Windows Media Player is the famous VLC media player that comes with support for all Windows versions including the October 2018 Update.

New Windows Media Player Plugin for Firefox

Anyone who uses Windows Vista and Mozilla Firefox may be pleased to hear that the Windows Media Player team has now released a plugin for Firefox that should allow the browser to play WMP content on websites. Here are the steps to get it working:
    • Installation of the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin may require administrative access to your PC. It is recommended that you close all other open browser windows before continuing with the installation.
    • Click the Install button to automatically download and install the Windows Media Player Firefox Plugin.
    • Depending on your security settings, you may see a Security Warning dialog box. Click Install to install the plugin.
There is a known issue if you are using Firefox version 2.0.0.3 on Windows Vista with the installer failing with error code -203. To work around this simply restart Firefox (you will get a notification that Windows Vista will be changing the Firefox compatibility settings) and then install again - the second time should succeed.

The download is available here, and the new plugin works on all versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista (although it is mostly intended for Vista, as that currently has no WMP support in Firefox).
