Windows 10’s new ad for Edge targets third-party browsers

Google Chrome is at the top of the browser thrones, but Microsoft has recently revamped its Edge browser and the company has taken big steps to push their updated browser into the conversation.

We’ve seen Microsoft Edge ads on certain Microsoft websites, Windows 10’s Start menu, and Windows Search. The firm is now taking things a bit further. Spotted by us earlier today, users are now seeing an Edge “recommendation” when trying to search for Chrome or Firefox in Windows Search page.

In our tests, the recommendation for new Microsoft Edge popped up only for two keywords—Google Chrome and Firefox. If the Edge browser is installed, the ad or recommendation disappears.

It was quietly added by Microsoft and “recommendation” is triggered when trying to install Chrome and Firefox. I couldn’t reproduce the same recommendation for other third-party browsers such as Opera, Brave or Vivaldi on Windows 10.

It’s worth noting that the ad on the left side is part of the Windows 10 Search UI and the ad on the right side is powered by Bing.

The pop-up is not intrusive, but it does not provide a close option for turning the messages.

Seen above, the message in this ad or recommendation (as Microsoft says) is pretty straightforward. Microsoft wants you to know that Edge has been recreated with the same technology as Google Chrome and it is the faster, safer browser, designed for Windows 10.

Microsoft is currently experimenting these ads with a select group of users and it won’t stop you from installing your third-party browser.

It’s clear that Microsoft is trying to get users to Edge when they search for other browsers, but it’s also important to point out that Google also bothers users to switch to Chrome whenever you visit one of its services such as Drive, Gmail, etc in Microsoft Edge.

Microsoft is developing a built-in ad blocker for its Edge browser

"One of the first browser add-ons many people install to improve their online experience is Adblock Plus or something similar. Until recently, Microsoft Edge's lack of support for add-ons put off a lot of would-be users, but reports from Build 2016 suggest that native ad blocking is on its way to the Internet Explorer successor.

Adblock Plus is coming to Edge, but built-in ad blocking would negate the need for such an add-on. A slide shown off and snapped at a Build presentation shows that the next version of Edge, in response to user feedback, will feature ad blocking capabilities. There's no word on delivery timescale, but the upcoming Windows 10 Anniversary Update would seem a likely candidate.

ZDNet's Ed Bott photographed the slide which shows Microsoft's development roadmap built around feedback from testers. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it's entry number four that's more intriguing.

"Build ad blocking features into the browser" is listed as a Feature Request from users. But the good news is that it is not only listed as being "Deliverable 4682811", but as "Targeted for the next version".

This will no doubt come as good news for those who have fallen in love with Edge, but it's not something that will be welcomed by the likes of Adblock Plus. It does seem that, particularly in the mobile arena, there is a move to baking ad blocking into the browser so it makes sense that Microsoft is following the trend. But it is the fact that Edge straddles Windows 10 on the desktop and Windows 10 Mobile that makes this a particularly interesting move.

Keep an eye out for Insider builds in the coming weeks as the feature may be just around the corner.

Forget extensions, built-in ad blocking is coming to Microsoft Edge - [UPDATE... no it's not!]

  3. Save Target in MS Edge

Is there any way that future updates of Microsoft Edge will contain a ‘save target as’ option as it is an essential tool for my use of the internet. If not could someone suggest an alternative application/ browser that will work with Windows 10 and provide
    this most useful option.

Edge browser no longer displays the news feed

I am replying to the above advice. Been there, done that. In fact, I did that set of steps before I ever asked for help here. Does anyone have any other suggestions? It is very inconvenient to have no taskbar.

    Thank you.
