Windows 10: Windows 10X comes with a special feature to run certain apps

Windows 10X, a modular and lightweight version of Windows 10 and Windows Core OS (WCOS), could be released to manufacturers or at least hit the RTM status in December, but it won’t come with native support for Win32 desktop apps.

Rumour suggests that Windows 10X will be initially all about UWP and PWAs, but it will reportedly support Win32 apps in 2022 via a special virtualized container.

The virtualization technology, internally known as ‘VAIL’, would allow the OS to read and run Win32 apps/code. Unfortunately, VAIL has been pushed back and Windows 10X users will be stuck using Store or web apps for about one year.

Since Microsoft has discontinued the UWP Edge browser, Windows 10X will ship with the Chromium-based Edge, which is also based on Win32 code.

A new feature in Windows Core OS products called “SHIM” allows Microsoft Edge to run on Windows 10X as a native app. SHIM will translate legacy APIs to run the browser and enable native-like experience so you’ll not notice any performance or technical issues.

For now, it looks like only Microsoft Edge operates via this special feature and it’s unclear if Microsoft will expand the project to include other apps.

HoloLens 2, which is also a product of Windows Core OS family, uses the same SHIM library to translate APIs.

As we noted above, Windows 10X will hit RTM (release to manufacturer) status by the end of 2020 and Microsoft has already started optimizing apps for the operating system.

We’ll likely see the first Windows 10X device in the spring of 2021 (Q2-Q3) from Microsoft’s hardware partners. The low-powered and affordable Windows 10X laptops will rival Chromebooks in the education market and Microsoft is also said to be working on its own Surface device with this new operating system.

In fact, Surface Laptop Go could have been the first device to run Windows 10X, but it didn’t happen because Microsoft isn’t yet ready to ship that variant of Windows 10.

Xbox Ambassadors profile Specializations coming soon

Hey everybody! Soon we’ll be adding a new feature to your Xbox Ambassadors profile–Specializations. Specializations give Ambassadors the opportunity to share their individual preferences around game genre, type, platform, social channels, focus areas, and skills. By sharing this information on your profile, you can better connect with like-minded Ambassadors and we can better tailor program activities and communications for you.

By filling out the Specializations section of your profile, you’re telling us and other Ambassadors what YOU prefer to do and see in the grand world of gaming. This is the first step in a larger objective for the program to create a more personalized Ambassador experience. Once we know what Ambassadors are most interested in, we can use those insights to solidify partnerships with Xbox teams and studios that give our community more opportunities that are meaningful to them.

You can expect to see Specializations in your profile in the near future. As soon as they are live, we’ll be sure to notify our Ambassadors!

Step-by-step: how to navigate and use Specializations

Navigate to your Xbox Ambassadors Profile at https://ambassadors.microsoft.com/xb...file/overview/

Select “Specializations” from the ribbon at top of Profile

Hit the “Edit” button on right-hand side of screen to get started!

Select as many or as few Specializations as you’d like

When you’re finished for now, hit the “Save Changes” button and you’re all set!

Note: once you’ve saved your changes, your Specializations will be visible to anyone looking at your Profile. To check out another Ambassador’s Specializations, search their Gamertag on the Leaderboard and click on the Gamertag. You can then click “specializations” to see theirs, and vice versa!

On Mobile?

The steps to set your Specializations are the same, but the UI is different.

Head to your Profile at (https://ambassadors.microsoft.com/xb...file/overview/)

Hit the drop-down menu in the center of your screen (defaults to “Overview” and select “Specializations”

Hit the “Edit” button and choose whichever Specializations you’d like!

Don’t forget to click “Save Changes” before you leave the page!

"For discovery and engagement, Microsoft will add a "Suggested" list, which will deliver smart suggestions of apps from the Windows Store if after a while you haven't installed any apps. You can also notice that the app tile also provides star rating and pricing information for a particular app."

"As the system learns your behavior using and installing apps, the Suggested list will become the "Recently added" list of apps. And when the users use the app enough, the apps will then get listed in the "Most used" list."

You've gotta be kiddin' me. There must be some way to disable this "Get the App" notification or else I'm staying away from Windows 10 for good. Total nonsense. This feature won't be available to Enterprise users, will it?
