Windows 11 Auto HDR is broken

Windows Auto HDR is using the wrong Gamma Curve and it's ruining blacks. Auto HDR actually Windows Advanced Color in general uses what the spec says is the correct gamma curve. The problem is nobody actually used that for real monitors. Effectively, Windows has had a de jure transfer curve sRGB Piecewise and a different de facto transfer curve Pure Power 2.2 for decades. Nobody bothered to enforce sRGB Piecewise and nobody authored content for it either. Then when MS made HDR/Advanced Color, they made a highly dubious decision to treat all untagged SDR material as sRGB, including the pie

Auto HDR doesn't seem to do anything in Windows 11

    Horace,

I did eventually get Auto HDR working (sort of),

I am working with two HDR capable displays (the LG C1 and the Samsung NEO G9)

It required restarting my computer and forced me to mess with Gamma/Black Level correction settings via Nvidia Control Panel/Monitor settings.

As for buying a magazine just to see them post the same settings on literally every Auto HDR article... I don't think that would help. The problem with HDR seems to be two fold

    1. developers that implement HDR in their games aren't actually mastering their game for HDR. they are using some kind of upscaling technology to make a SDR game into a HDR game. This has a devastating impact on contrast and black levels.

    2. HDR is still broken in Windows. even Auto HDR and it's algorithm produces elevated blacks without some kind of per game gamma/black level correction on the user side.

It would be nice if Microsoft would just admit that it's HDR support in general is buggy at best, completely broken at worst.

  3. Windows 11 is changing my screen brightness while I am actively using Apps

Could you confirm if HDR is enabled on your system? If not, To enable HDR and Auto HDR in Windows 11, please follow these steps:

    1. Enable HDR in Windows 11:
      • Navigate to Settings > System > Display.
      • Toggle on "Use HDR" under the "HDR" section.
    2. Enable Auto HDR:
      • Within the same Display settings, toggle on "Use Auto HDR".
Once HDR and Auto HDR are enabled, you'll notice the "SDR content brightness" slider under the HDR settings. Now, proceed to adjust the SDR content brightness slider:

    1. Adjust the SDR Content Brightness Slider:
      • The SDR content brightness slider regulates the brightness of non-HDR content, such as the desktop and file explorer, when HDR is enabled. This adjustment may potentially resolve the issue you're facing.
If the issue persists after these adjustments, you may consider the following troubleshooting steps:

    • Connect a different monitor to your PC to determine if the issue lies with your monitor or your PC.
    • Alternatively, if you're experiencing significant difficulties, reverting to Windows 10 could be an option to explore.
Please let me know if you require any further assistance or clarification.
