Windows 10: Windows 11 Autopilot Kiosk

Hey guys I am relatively new to the IT field. Been working for about 4 years. Went from Dell Pro Support to Helpdesk for an enterprise company to Level 3 Desktop Support. The company recently started leveraging autopilot and in the past I was configuring machines as kiosk using Win10 which was incredibly easy. I have successfully been able to get the autopilot kiosk for win11 to work. The kiosks are setup for customers to just browse the internet that is it. So essentially you are just greeted with the Edge browser. You can check your email, you can browse any website. NowI know an autopiloted

I understand the problems you're experiencing with Windows 11 kiosk mode. Your issue seems to be a combination of a gesture handling known issue and the limitations of kiosk mode settings.

However, here are some general troubleshooting steps you can try:

Check for Windows Updates: Make sure your Windows 11 system is up-to-date. Microsoft regularly releases updates to fix known issues and improve system stability.

Reset Kiosk Mode: Try resetting the kiosk mode setup. Remove the kiosk account, restart the system, and set up the kiosk mode again.

Try Another Kiosk App: If possible, try using another application in kiosk mode to see if the issue is specific to Microsoft Edge.

Driver Updates: Ensure that your touchpad drivers are up-to-date. You can do this through the Device Manager.

If you're still experiencing the problem after trying these steps, it might be best to report the issue directly to Microsoft.

Microsoft attaches great importance to user experience, you can submit your ideas and suggestions through the Feedback Hub, and the development team will regularly review submissions for ideas or fixes.

Simplifying kiosk management for IT with Windows 10

This post outlines the investments Microsoft is making to simplify the configuration and management of kiosk devices, improving Windows 10 as a kiosk platform for IT organizations. Our investments in kiosk and Firstline Worker scenarios are part of a bigger mission to simplify IT in the modern workplace.

You see kiosks everywhere you go: in airports, supermarkets, movie theaters, restaurants, banks, and many other places. Kiosks have many forms and functions. What most people don’t realize is that many of them are powered by Windows.

Windows has long been the platform of choice for kiosk devices because of its security capabilities, the availability of applications, enterprise software assurance support, and a broad ecosystem of device and peripheral partners. Today we see a growing number of IT organizations developing and deploying their own kiosk solutions using standard hardware and, in some cases, repurposing existing hardware.

We use the term “kiosk” as an umbrella term for a broad category of devices, but it generally boils down to two main scenarios:

Kiosks that are used in the “public” domain and do not require users to login or authenticate.

Kiosks that are shared by Firstline Workers to complete a specific task, which typically requires the user to authenticate before accessing the device.

Both usage scenarios have a few requirements in common:

The need for security, regardless of where the kiosks are deployed.

A consistent experience for each person who uses them, so that no one person can modify the device in a way that impacts the next user.

The need for an intuitive experience that is focused on the task at hand.

In the past year, with every Windows feature update, we’ve introduced significant improvements to our kiosk capabilities:

Assigned access enables you to create not only single app kiosks for customers, but also provides the capability to create a kiosk that runs multiple apps.

Assigned access now works with Windows 10 Pro and higher, including in S Mode.

Windows Configuration Designer includes a wizard for single-app kiosk configuration. Install a provisioning package and your device is ready to go.

Multi-app kiosks now support both Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps and classic Win32 apps.

You can deploy curated kiosk experiences directly from the cloud using Microsoft Intune.

We continue to add more policies that enable IT to tailor the experience for end users. To name a few: power settings to enable any device to run 24/7, touch keyboard configuration policies, locked down Start screen, and more.

With the upcoming release of Windows 10, version 1803, we are taking the next steps in our efforts to make kiosks even more capable – and easier to deploy and configure. Some key assigned access enhancements include:

Support for multiple screens for digital signage use cases.

The ability to ensure all MDM configurations are enforced on the device prior to entering assigned access using the Enrollment Status page.

The ability to configure and run Shell Launcher in addition to existing UWP Store apps.

A simplified process for creating and configuring an auto-logon kiosk account so that a public kiosk automatically enters a desired state after a reboot, a critical security requirement for public-facing use cases.

For multi-user Firstline Worker kiosk devices, instead of specifying every user, it’s now possible to assign different assigned access configurations to Azure AD groups or Active Directory groups.

To help with troubleshooting, you can now view error reports generated if an assigned access-configured app has issues.

Kiosk Browser

We are excited to complete the circle of support for classic Windows desktop apps and UWP Store Apps with a new Kiosk Browser app. The Kiosk Browser app is built on Microsoft Edge and can be used to create a tailored browsing experience. Kiosk Browser is great for presenting interactive web apps and digital signage content. Kiosk Browser can be configured to navigate to a default URL without showing any UI. When used with other types of kiosks, it can be configured with a list of allowed URLs and the UI elements that should be presented (e.g. navigation buttons). It can also be configured to automatically clear user data between sessions.

To ensure IT has control, Kiosk Browser can only be configured through provisioning or an MDM provider such as Intune. Please refer to our documentation for more information on how to deploy and configure Kiosk Browser.

The Kiosk Browser is available in the Microsoft Store for Business for you to try out yourself.

Looking forward

This post would not be complete without sharing some of our future plans. We will continue to make it easier for IT departments to manage, configure, and deploy Windows 10 kiosks for customers and Firstline Workers, and plan to include the following capabilities in a future Windows 10 feature update:

Deploy a kiosk device with minimal user interaction, thanks to Windows AutoPilot and device management support. Simply unbox the device, start it up, and the device is ready to go. Stay tuned; this will be available to Windows Insiders in preview soon.

Enabling device management to remotely trigger a Windows AutoPilot Reset to bring a kiosk back to a pristine state for a reliable kiosk experience.

Integration of the Kiosk Browser’s functionality directly into Microsoft Edge to support a larger scope of web scenarios.

Introducing Windows Autopilot for HoloLens 2

In addition to supporting the deployment and management of Windows 10 devices like laptops, tablets, and desktops, we are taking Windows Autopilot to uncharted territory by introducing the private preview of Windows Autopilot deployment for HoloLens 2!

Since Windows Autopilot was first introduced with Windows 10, version 1703, it has come a long way to enable organizations to deploy and manage their Windows 10 devices in significant less time and at noticeable cost savings. At its core, Windows Autopilot is a set of cloud technologies that offers greater efficiency and automation over traditional deployment and setup experiences.

As a critical component of Microsoft Endpoint Manager and our commitment to empowering IT, Windows Autopilot is designed to meet you where you are in your journey to simplified endpoint management and help you get where you want to be. We started with deployment scenarios for Azure AD then, in response to your feedback, Hybrid AD Join. In the spirit of innovation, we are working to support a broader range of devices with Windows Autopilot, starting with HoloLens 2.

Introducing Windows Autopilot for HoloLens 2

Microsoft HoloLens 2 is an untethered holographic computer with apps and solutions that help people across organizations learn, work, communicate, and collaborate more effectively using mixed reality. HoloLens 2 devices are commercial-ready with support for Azure AD, mobile device management (MDM), kiosk mode, always-on BitLocker, Windows Update for Business, and Microsoft Store for Business.

As adoption of HoloLens 2 is increasing, medical and educational institutions have found that deploying these devices at scale is challenging, time-consuming, and costly. Imagine an IT admin putting a HoloLens 2 device, calibrating the device, then moving through all the decision-making steps, such as user id and password, to join the device to their tenant. Now repeat this process for every device they need to deploy in their organization.

Windows Autopilot for HoloLens 2 with Microsoft Endpoint Manager solves this problem and delivers on the same promise of efficiency, simplified deployment, and streamlined device security and endpoint management as other Windows Autopilot deployment scenarios, driving significant cost and time savings for your organization.

How Windows Autopilot for HoloLens 2 works

With the current private preview, Windows Autopilot for HoloLens 2 support self-deploying mode with Azure AD only. That means the deployment process looks like this:

Join the device to Azure AD.

Enroll in Microsoft Endpoint Manager/Microsoft Intune (or another MDM service), leveraging Azure AD for automatic MDM enrollment to begin downloading all device targeted policies, user targeted applications, certificates, and networking profiles.

Land a shared device login state for the user with zero interaction.

The deployment scenarios currently supported with the private preview of Windows Autopilot for HoloLens 2 are as follows:

Azure AD join

Self-deployment mode

MDM enrollment with polices, certificates, kiosk mode, etc. applied during deployment

Device name setup before Azure AD join

Preset keyboard language from list of HoloLens 2 supported languages

Windows Autopilot can be used with HoloLens 2 devices with Windows 10 build 19041.1002.200107-0909 or later, and an internet connection.

Registering a HoloLens 2 device with Windows Autopilot

In the coming months, HoloLens 2 devices will be shipped as "Windows Autopilot ready" and have a Windows product key ID (PKID) barcode printed on the outside of the box. This PKID will simplify Windows Autopilot device registration by allowing distributors and resellers to register HoloLens 2 devices with their customers' tenants without powering on the actual devices. HoloLens 2 hardware ID collection for Windows Autopilot

We have also simplified the process of collecting the hardware ID (also referred to as hardware hash) and diagnostic logs for HoloLens 2 devices. There is no need to run a PowerShell script to collect the hardware ID or diagnostic logs during setup. With HoloLens 2 devices, you can simply collect logs and hardware IDs by following these simple steps:

While the HoloLens 2 device is powered on, press and release the Power and Volume down buttons together to trigger the hardware ID and diagnostic log collection process.

Connect the HoloLens 2 device to a PC using a USB cable so that it shows up in File Explorer.

Browse to Internal Storage > Documents and extract AutopilotDiagnostics.zip. This file/folder will contain a CSV file with a a file name that begins “DeviceHash…”.

Getting started with the private preview of Windows Autopilot for HoloLens 2

Make sure your organization meets all requirements for Windows Autopilot and self-deploying mode, which include networking, licensing, and configuration requirements.

Enroll in the Windows Autopilot for HoloLens 2 private preview program by visiting Microsoft Forms, or scanning this QR code:

Follow the instructions documented in this Windows Autopilot for HoloLens 2 evaluation guide. If your organization is using Microsoft Endpoint Manager and Windows Autopilot, most steps will not be new to you, but this guide will take you the process step by step.
