Windows 10: Windows 11: can’t get past the setup screen

Here’s what I see: Unfortunately your computer had to restart because there was an issue obtaining updates for your computer. It’s like I never set it up but this happened after I updated my computer.

Microsoft is aware of a known issue in Windows 11, version 22H2, that causes the touch keyboard to not appear in the Windows 11 setup screens after resetting Windows. Microsoft is currently working on a solution that will be released in an upcoming Windows update.

If you experience this issue, there are two options that will let you work around this issue. You can either:

1. Connect your device to a physical keyboard to complete Windows Setup, or
   
2. You can choose to shut down your device and restart Windows. The touch keyboard should appear after restarting.

I have Windows 11, version 22H2, installed on my tablet PC. Since it’s a tablet, I use the touch keyboard to type directly on the touchscreen.



I needed to reset Windows, and now I’m going through Windows setup screens, however the touch keyboard isn’t appearing in the setup screens this time. As a result, I can’t enter a password on the “Let’s connect you to a network” screen to proceed to the next step.

To Block Windows 11 update, see the steps below, which is explained later on step by step. This would also work even if you have clicked Download and install.

• Right-click Start and select Windows Powershell(admin).
  
• Press Yes when Prompted.
  
• Type cmd.exe to open Command Prompt inside Powershell.
  

Paste the following command to enable Targeted Updates to a specific release:

• reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate /v TargetReleaseversion /t REG_DWORD /d 1
  

If you are on Windows 10 version 21H2, use the command below:

• reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate /v TargetReleaseversionInfo /t REG_SZ /d 21H2
  

If you are on Windows 10 version 21H1, use the command below:

• reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate /v TargetReleaseversionInfo /t REG_SZ /d 21H1
  

You should see the “The command completed successfully” message when you enter the commands.
