Windows 10: Windows 11 computer not seeing USB flash drives

I have an Asus computer from 2018 https://www.newegg.com/gold-asus-f510uf-es71-mainstream/p/N82E16834234920 that has windows 11. I haven't used flash drives on it in a while my kids computer. I recently tried to put flash drives in and they were not recognized. I tried different drives in different usb ports and even switched so its' not the drives or the ports. I read on line that you should uninstall in device manager and windows will reinstall the drivers on restart. I tried that and it did not work. What can I do to get the computer recognize USB flash drives

USB Flash drive made bootable

Hi Nelson,

Check if there is any slide switch on the side that provides write protection. It show's a closed and open lock on each side. We suggest to follow these steps below:

• Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port.
• Click Start, type devmgmt.msc in the Search textbox and press Enter.
• Find Disk Drives and expand it.
• Find the USB flash drive you want to format, and double-click it. It opens the
  Properties dialog box.
• Click Policies tab.
• By default, the Optimize for quick removal option selected, switch it to Optimize for performance and then press
  OK.
• Now open Computer. Right click on the USB Flash Drive and select Format. The Format dialog box now appears.
• Select NTFS in the File System field.
• Press Start and wait while the process will be completed.

You can also connect the USB drive on a different computer and try formatting.

help. USB drive isn't assigned a drive letter.

Any usb flash drive I plug into my computer isn't assigned a drive letter. The physical drive shows in the "safely remove hardware" but it doesnt show up in disk management. I have tried to populate the volume thru the safely remove hardware properties window and it does pop up in the list but it doesn't stay there. This isn't a format or assign a letter problem. It's more complicated then that. Maybe one of the services needed for usb drive management was disabled? Suggestions needed. btw external usb harddrives work fine.

 

Installing windows off of a USB stick

Step By Step from vista:
From admin cmd prompt

1. diskpart
1a. list disk
2. select disk 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
3. clean
4. create partition primary
5. select partition 1 (replace 1 with your usb drive)
6. active
7. format fs=fat32
8. assign
9. exit

Copy Windows Vista's DVD ROM content to the Flash Drive

xcopy d:\*.* /s/e/f e:\ (d being your vista cd and e being your usb stick)

And that's it, boot off your usb disk
