  1. Windows 11 Default FileType is broken

Ok first ill say that I searched the internet to find out how to fix this already numerous times and nothing worked. I tried FileTypeMan, ShellBagsView ShellBag Cleaner and the basic reset dfualt file types. and nothing works. I will say that this started when I installed IrfanViewer for image viewing. I use to use FastStone but just changed. So anytime I try to open JPG, PNG and other image files they all default to Windows Photo Viewer. I try everything to change it but when I click Open With, it never gives me the option to "ALWAYS" it only has just once available. I tried everything, I fou

Unable to change default app by protocol or filetype.

Hi, I don't have Acrobat installed. With Sumatra as my default pdf reader, that hyperlink to a pdf docoument opens in.. yes.. Sumatra. Changing to Edge:

the hyperlink opens in... yes.. Edge.

If, as seems the case, Bluebeam is correctly associated with pdf files, I can't say why the hyperlink fails. Your guess about the protocol may be right- I don't know. If you could make any change to that to test that theory, as you suggest, that would help.

If you wish to view the relevant registry key, a convenient way to get there is via free Filetypesman - a rt click option.

'Choose default app by filetype' broken for non-Store apps

I cannot select a new default app for a filetype.

I am using a Surface Go with S mode disabled and 'Allow apps from anywhere' selected under 'Settings > Apps > Apps & features.' The app I want to set as a default (Notepad++) is a downloaded executable, not an app from the Windows Store.

If I right-click on a .txt file, select 'Open with > Choose another app,' select Notepad++, and check 'Always use this app to open text files,' no change is effected. The file opens just fine with Notepad++, but Notepad remains the default app. There is
no error message. It just doesn't work.

If I go into 'Settings > Apps > Default apps > Choose default apps by filetype,' I can scroll down to '.txt,' click on the current default, and select a new app. This works fine if I select an app from the Windows Store (e.g. WordPad). If I select Notepad++
or any other downloaded executable, however, Settings reverts to the system default (Notepad).

Again, no error message. It is simply broken.

    Thank you for any help.

Windows 11 Default FileType is broken

Unable to change default app by protocol or filetype.

Hi, just considering what is shown in the Open With options, for example:

Windows 11 Default FileType is broken 227072d1552402754t-unable-change-default-app-protocol-filetype-snap-2019-03-12-14.57.25.png

Here you can see Sumatra is my default reader.

Windows 11 Default FileType is broken 227073d1552402839t-unable-change-default-app-protocol-filetype-untitled.png

Here you can see Sumatra and Chrome are added to the Open With list, + Edge, a system default.

The choice presented to you for .fdf, .pdfxml, .pdx for example, should depend on whether Bluebeam has correctly registered itself in the appropriate place as capable of handling those extensions.

So, for example, is Bluebeam shown in the Open With list for those extensions?

It is not enough that a program is installed that is potentially capable of handling a file type (e.g. via an Open dialogue) but that it be so registered. That is up to the author to specify.

This opens in Sumatra, my default.

Unfortunately this option in the Control Panel now opens in Settings:

and does not allow you to do what it claims.
