Onedrive changes desktop link to %USERPROFILES%\Documents to OneDrive's\Documents folder

This is absolutely driving me nuts.

I have a link to the local Documents folder (because Onedrive slows down everything I do locally to a crawl). The path is simply this:

    %USERPROFILE%\Documents

    It should point to C:\Users\(username)\Documents

But when I double click the link (which I save to my Desktop, which is located on C:\Users\(username)\OneDrive\Desktop), Windows CHANGES the path to C:\Users\(username)\OneDrive\Documents

How do I create a link to C:\Users\(username)\Documents on my Onedrive Desktop, and when I double-click the link, it GOES to C:\Users\(username)\Documents ?

It's driving me NUTS! How do I STOP Windows from doing this? And since this is a corporate laptop, I can't UNINSTALL Onedrive so that's not an option.

  3. OneDrive Document Folder is in a file C:/ ..../Old Documents

On OneDrive my Documents folder has a file name named "C:\Users\.....\OneDrive\Old Documents". I also have another folder "C:\Users\drrly\OneDrive\Documents" but that is not the default Documents folder. To add further confusion there is a subfolder of the "C:\Users\.....\OneDrive\Old Documents" which is "C:\Users\.....\OneDrive\Old Documents\Old Documents" ! I think all of this confusion happened after a couple of Windows 11 re-installations.

    I would like to:

    1. Rename "C:\Users\.....\OneDrive\Old Documents" as "C:\Users\.....\OneDrive\Documents" and retain it as the default Documents folder.

    2. Merge the other "C:\Users\drrly\OneDrive\Documents" into my Documents folder

    3. Merge the "C:\Users\.....\OneDrive\Old Documents\Old Documents" into Document folder.

I could complete 2 and 3 above if I could work out how to do 1 but anytime I try to rename the "C:\Users\.....\OneDrive\Old Documents" folder Windows only lets me change the display name "Documents" and not the file path name.

I hope all this makes sense to someone reading it!

  4. Windows 11 Documents point to c:\%username%\onedrive\documents can't move the folder

OneDrive ate my entire /documents folder! Help!

    Hello AppDreamer,

Check using the tutorial below to see if you may have turned on backing up your Documents folder to OneDrive. When this happens, the files in the "C:\Users\<username>\Documents" folder get moved to the "C:\Users\<username>\OneDrive\Documents" folder and synced with online OneDrive.

If so, you can turn off backing up the folder and manually move your files back.
