  1. Windows 11 File Explorer search not using latest Modified Date on files

    When using a date range search in File Explorer, the date shown in the Search result list is not the latest modified date on the file. I reindexed and it applied the latest modified date at that point in time. However moving forward, any updates to a file are not reflected in on the date shown in the search result. The properties on the file are updated correctly. This used to work fine a few months ago. I am on Windows 11 Home, Version 10.022631 Build 22631 and have the latest patches from 12/12/2024. Please help with determining what could be causing this issue and provide a remediatio

  2. Using File Explorer to search by date range

    I rarely use File Explorer because I find it one of the least user-friendly facilities I've ever come across. But now I need to search a folder and its sub-folders for all files created or modified between 2 particular dates. My experience thus far is:

    • I want to search 'Current folder' and 'All subfolders', but only one can be selected -- I presume 'All subfolders' includes the current folder, but that's not what the words say;
    • under "Date modified", I tried 'Last year' and 'Last month' to see how they worked -- both searches brought up 1 file only, when I know there are many files that fit each of those parameters!
    • a search of Microsoft Community elicited several references to a calendar appearing when 'Date modified' is selected -- but no such calendar has ever appeared for me!
    • so, based on other Microsoft Community suggestions, I tried searching for 'modified:15/11/21-5/1/22' -- nil result, even though many files were created or modified within that range!
    So, my questions are:

    1. How do I get File Explorer to work properly for 'Last year' or for a selected date range?
    2. Are there any non-Microsoft file explorer apps that are more user-friendly (ie, easier to use) than MS File Explorer?
    Thank you in anticipation.

    Windows Explorer is slow to update "date modified" and hampers searching for most recently updated files

    Windows Explorer doesn't seem to be keeping up with "date modified". E.g. I modify a file in Word then save it to my local drive. Then I open Windows Explorer and sort by Date Modified. The file I just saved should be displayed at the top of the file
    list, but it doesn't. I have to also add that it "sometimes" works, but most of the time, it doesn't. It seems like it takes several minutes for the file system to update to sort by Date Modified. Any suggestions?

    Windows 11 File Explorer search not using latest Modified Date on files

    Windows 10 File Explorer doesn't find some files by date modified

    Just tried some batch files with some DOS commands. Curiously when I found one to search my D drive using a string of text (yesterday's date), several files showed up. All were modified yesterday and are on my D drive. Here it is:

    @Echo off

    dir D:\*.* /s /t:c | findstr "7/31/2017" >Directory_by_date.txt

    start /w notepad "Directory_by_date.txt"

    exit

    When I looked at the few files that showed up in the File Explorer search by date, THEY WERE NOT THE SAME LISTS AT ALL! Not one file was on both lists. And neither list had a couple of files I knew were modified yesterday.

    So now I have three ways to search for files by modified date:

    • DIR gives me one list.
    • File Explorer search gives me a different list.
    • Visually scanning every directory I know I worked on gives me other files that were modified yesterday, some on the above lists some not.
    So what this means is no method is reliable.

    I give up.
