Windows 10: Windows 11 File Explorer Update October 2023 - Folder navigation is now much harder

The update to the File Explorer address bar is making it more difficult to navigate between folders. When a window isn't maximised, only the current folder is visible in the address bar - see the example below: Also, the enlarged font means that less information can be displayed within the address bar. There is an option to display the previous folders in the directory path but this displays in a very small window, making it next to useless: This update really is detrimental to the user experience and makes folder navigation more confusing and much slower. Windows 10 Tweaks

Pressing “Windows+Pause Break” (it’s up there next to scroll lock) opens the “System” Window.

Windows 10: In the new version of Windows, Explorer has a section called Quick Access. This includes your frequent folders and recent files. Explorer defaults to opening this page when you open a new window. If you’d rather open the usual This PC, with links to your drives and library folders, follow these steps:

• Open a new Explorer window.
• Click View in the ribbon.
• Click Options.
• Under General, next to “Open File Explorer to:” choose “This PC.”
• Click OK

IMPORTANT Some versions of Windows 11, version 21H2 will reach end of service on October 10, 2023. These are Home, Pro, Pro Education, and Pro for Workstation. After October 10, 2023, these devices will not receive monthly security and quality updates. These updates contain protections from the latest security threats.

We will continue to support the remaining editions of Windows 11, version 21H2.

Windows 11 File explorer lag

The fix for performance improvements is live in Dev Channel - it should be ported back soon with stable release, as mentioned in the blog post.

• Fixed an issue where the command bar was doing unnecessary calculations when navigating to folders, causing an unexpected decrease in performance. This is also believed to be the root cause of performance issues when using drag to select files, as well as using the arrow keys to navigate in certain folders.
  

NOTE: Some fixes noted here in Insider Preview builds from the active development branch may make their way into the servicing updates for the released version of Windows 11 that became generally available on October 5th.
