Windows 11 has suddenly started asking me to "Insert your security key into the USB port".

Windows 11 Home 22H2OS Build 22621.963Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22638.1000.0When I double click on "Personal Vault" in my OneDrive folder in Windows Explorer, it usually asks me to tap Accept on my Microsoft Authenticator app. However a couple of days ago, it started asking me to insert a security key screenshot 1 below. It's never done this before, I don't have a security key and there is no security key set up in my security options in the "Advanced security options" my Microsoft account. When that doesn't work or if I press "Cancel", it then asks me to "Use my passkey" scree

    USB ports failed

    Hi,

To fully isolate where this problem is coming from, please answer the following:

    • Have you tried connecting the peripheral devices to another computer to check if they will function?
    • How old is the laptop?

You can find additional things to try to fix USB port problems on this
    page.

We also suggest you run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter
in Windows 10. Here are the steps:

    • Press the Windows key on your keyboard.
    • Type Troubleshooting then press Enter.
    • On the left side, click View all.
    • Select Hardware and Devices.
    • Click Next and see if it will find any problems.

Keep us updated about the issue.

    USB ports

    Hi Frank,

Inserting and removing a USB device repeatedly may cause the USB port to stop responding. When the port is in this state, it no longer recognizes any USB device, and the USB device will not work.

Here are few things that you can do to resolve the issue:

Use Device Manager to scan for hardware changes. After your computer scans for hardware changes, it might recognize the USB device that is connected to the USB port so that you can use the device.

To scan for hardware changes, follow these steps:

    • Click Start, and then click Run.

Note If you are running Windows Vista, click Start, and then use the Start Search box.
    • Type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. Device Manager opens.
    • In Device Manager, click your computer so that it is highlighted.
    • Click Action, and then click Scan for hardware changes.
    • Check the USB device to see whether it is working.

Turn off Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

    • In the Device Manager dialog box, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers, right-click USB Root Hub, and then click Properties.
    • In the USB Root Hub Properties dialog box, click the Power Management tab. Uncheck the
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
      box.

Let us know how it goes after performing the suggested troubleshooting steps.
