Windows 11: installation on non-compatible systems possible

Microsoft updated the minimum system requirements of the company's upcoming Windows 11 operating system yesterday. Windows customers and administrators who had hoped for less strict requirements, did not get what they wished for. While Microsoft did add a handful of seventh generation Intel processors to the list of compatible processors, it did not change other requirements or unlock all 7th generation processors. For AMD hardware, nothing has been added in this adjustment of system requirements.

The change is as minor as it gets, and most customers whose systems were not compatible previously are left hanging. The requirements prevent Windows 10 systems that don't meet the minimum system requirements from being upgraded to Windows 11 using Windows Update. The new operating system won't be offered via Windows Update.

What Microsoft did not reveal in the updated announcement is that there is an official way to install Windows 11 even if the device is not compatible. Microsoft is quiet about it, and did not reveal it in the announcement.

Windows 11 can be installed on non-compatible devices using installation media, e.g. by using the Media Creation Tool. Some requirements do need to be met, e.g. that the system has enough storage available, but the installation is not prevented if the processor is not on the list of supported processors.

The requirements that still need to be met are:

    • 64-bit dual core CPU with 1-GHz or higher.
    • 4 Gigabytes of RAM.
    • 64 Gigabytes of free storage.
    • TPM 1.2

Details are not clear at this point. It is unclear if administrators may opt-in to keep installed applications, settings and files, or if only a blank slate installation is allowed on incompatible systems.

Microsoft told The Verge that the option to circumvent the minimum requirements are designed for businesses and organizations primarily to evaluate Windows 11. Microsoft does not provide any guarantees in regards to system reliability or driver compatibility in this case, but won't block customers, home or organizational, from installing Windows 11 on incompatible systems.

Microsoft contacted The Verge after the original story was published, stating that non-compatible systems may not be eligible for receiving updates with Windows Updates. If true, it would certainly reduce the incentive to install Windows 11 on non-compatible systems, even if it is still possible to install updates manually by downloading them from the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

    Closing Words

Being able to install Windows 11 on incompatible systems is a welcome step in the right direction. Still, it seems likely that millions of devices will have to stay on Windows 10 or earlier versions of Windows due to these restrictions.

The confusion surrounding Windows 11 updates will hopefully sort itself out before Microsoft releases the operating system officially. If not, it is creating a divide in the userbase, and that is probably something that Microsoft does not want either.

Now You: Will you upgrade to Windows 11?

3DMark 11 v1.0.4 Released, Now Fully Compatible with Windows 8

Futuremark updated 3DMark 11 to version 1.0.4, which makes the benchmark fully compatible with Windows 8. The update also addresses other compatibility issues and a few uncommon bugs. Benchmark scores are not affected and scores from this new version can be compared with scores from the previous version 3DMark 11 v1.0.3.

    DOWNLOAD: 3DMark 11 v1.0.4
    Improvements:
    • Keyboard focus is no longer checked during the demo or when running the benchmark in a loop. Note that if the display switches to the desktop due to a popup window during the benchmark, the run will still be aborted as the display mode is no longer the same.
    • 3DMark 11 now remembers the last custom resolution used.
    • GPU count detection for multi-GPU systems is now correct even when SystemInfo is explicitly disabled.
    • 3DMark 11 will now prevent Windows from entering Sleep during the test.
    • The license key is now reset when the benchmark is reinstalled, allowing removal of invalid keys.
    Compatibility:
    • SystemInfo updated to version 4.15 for full Windows 8 compatibility.
    • Updated DirectX redistributable.
    • Now using static Visual C++ 2010 runtime libraries to fix rare installation issues on some systems.
    • Removed dependency on EvaDotNet.dll and EvaDotNet.DirectX.dll for GPU enumeration to fix compatibility issues with some systems.
    Bug Fixes:
    • Fixed display initialization code that caused "SetFullscreenState failed: DXGI_ERROR_NOT_CURRENTLY_AVAILABLE" errors on some systems.
    • Fixed several memory and texture leaks, improving stability during very long looping runs.
    • The HUD timer no longer rolls over if a single test takes more than ten minutes. (Yes, this could happen during the Combined Test on some low end DirectX 11 cards.)
    Professional Edition Only:
    • Fixed submitting saved files to 3dmark.com from the command line.
    • Image Quality Tool no longer gives a cryptic error if the output directory does not exist.

    Windows 10 Compatibility

    Hi,

Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community, we appreciate your interest in Windows 10.

I understand your concern about compatibility of the driver on Windows 10.

I suggest you to refer to the below link and check if the driver is compatible.

    Refer:
    Windows Compatibility Center

If not compatible, I suggest you to install the driver in compatibility mode on Windows 10.

You can install Windows 8/8.1 drivers in compatibility mode if there are no Windows 10 compatible drivers.

Follow the steps to install in Compatibility mode:

    • Download the updated driver from the manufacturer’s website.
    • Right click the driver installation file and select
Properties then tap or click the Compatibility tab.
    • Place a check in the Run this program in compatibility mode for: box.
    • Tap the drop down box and select a previous operating system, then tap or click
      OK.
    • Try installing the driver and check.

Hope it helps. Kindly let us know if you need further assistance with Windows Operating System. We will be glad to assist you.
