Windows 10: Windows 11 keeps changing default apps

This is driving me insane! And yes, I know how I'm supposed to be able to change these, and I do, but Win11 continues to hijack them back.It happens most often with PDFs changing from Adobe back to Edge. Often within minutes of having changed the default settings to Adobe. I open a new one and it comes up in Edge. Sometimes it will hold for a day or two before switching back to Edge.The other primary culprit is changing the default Mail app from Outlook back to the Windows Mail app. Seems like MS would accept keeping Outlook!I seem to have stopped it hijacking default browser from Chrome to Ed

Windows10 Keeps Changing my Default Apps

There is a certain option in Settings where you can change the default apps for a specific file type. For example, your .psd file can be opened by a certain app as a default while the other file types can be opened by a different app. You can manually change
it by following these steps:

• Press Windows key + I.
• Select Apps, and then Default apps.
• Select Choose default apps by file type.
• From there, scroll down to the file type that you want to change the default app.

How to change default app for file type

'Open With > Choose another app' has three step, in the first it only offers apps registered for that file type. If you click 'More apps' it lists all registered apps regardless of suitability. Both these steps have the tick-box for 'Always use...' in my 18363.752. The third step, if needed, is 'Look for another app on this PC'. The 'Always use...' must be ticked before taking this step if you want the change to stick. However, WMP appears at the second step.

For a quick look at a JPG almost anything (including WMP) is more practical than Photos which on my system takes more than ten seconds just to open a photo. The OP is probably not aware that the Windows Photo Viewer is still available in W10, but hidden away. That's my default viewer for JPG.

And, once enabled, is available in Settings > Apps > Default apps.

 

Keeps changing all my default apps

I do appreciate your efforts and time. As I understand the system is not retaining default app settings.

I suggest you to try the steps provided below and check if it helps.

Restart the computer a few times and check for Windows Updates.

In the Search box on the taskbar, enter Windows Update, select Windows Update. On the Windows Update page, select Check for updates.

Try to run SFC scan and check.

It scans for damaged system files. Right-click the Start icon and select
Command Prompt (Admin). In the Command Prompt window, type
sfc /scannow and hit Enter.

Then type dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth and hit Enter.

Try to change the default browser.

  Go to Start > Settings > System.

  Choose Default apps, then scroll down to Web browser.
  
• 
  Tap or click the browser that’s currently listed as your default, then select the browser from the list of apps.
