Windows 11 laptop with external monitor having strange issuesd

I converted to Windows 11 recently so I could use Android under Windows to view the Washington Post mobile app on my PC.

I normally use my laptop in desktop mode. The laptop is connected to a docking station to provide power and additional connections. I have a HDMI connetction to an external monitor and USB wireless mouse. I power on the laptop using the power button on the docking station. The external monitor displays the startup screens and then I sign on and the external screen worked fine.

There were a few glitches, occasionally my external monitor would briefly go dark and then display again. But in the last week the setup has worked very strangely. When I powered up in desktop mode it acts normally until I get the signon screen. When I signed on to Windows, the taskbar acted strangely. All the system icons disappeared from the taskbar. The hidden icon, the power, internet and sound icons, and the notification icon were missing. I had turned on the show the desktop option for the top right corner of the taskbar, and it was gone. If I start applications, some show the active windows, but some don't. It acts like the screens are open, but not within the bounds of the display.

If I open the lid and press F7 to change the display configuration, the external monitor goes dark and only the PC screen is active in PC screen only mode. I change to duplicate and both screens are back to normal. All the system icons appear, all the open windows display.

If I close the lid or go to second screen only, the icons disappear, and some open windows disappear.

I understand there are issues with the close lid sensor causing problems with external monitor setups, but my issue happens with both the lid closing and changing the screen setup using F7 with the lid open.

My laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad X390. I have run the Lenovo system update program and it says all drivers are at the recommended level.

I just completed a repair upgrade for Windows 11 using the media creation tool. The problem remains.

The most likely culprit is a Lenovo supplied update: Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) Software and Device - 10 (1709 or Later)/11 (21H2 or Later) 2.17.100.2. It was installed on 12/30/2022, just before this issue started.

I turned SGX off in BIOS and the problem remains.

I don't understand why switching to second screen only would cause Windows to operate so strangely. The only issue I found with missing icons was some Windows 10 updates, and these seemed to be in all circumstances, not just when operating in second screen only mode.

F7 to change the screen configuration also is acting strangely. If I press F7 with both screens open and active, the option window opens on both screens, but if I change to PC screen only, both screens go dark for a few seconds and then the PC screen becomes active. If I use F7 t go to duplicate mode, the PC screen goes dark, comes back on, briefly becomes marginally smaller and goes back to full display and the second screen becomes active.

I am using the Lenovo forum to pursue this issue, but everyone is perplexed. I figured I would ask the Microsoft community to see if anyone else might be seeing similar issues.

I am using Windows 11 Pro, version 22H2, IS build 22621.963. Windows Update says I am up to date.

I am contemplating doing a Windows 11 clean install and reinstalling all my software and data. I have done this with Windows 10, and am reviewing what I need to do for Windows 11. It takes a while to inventory installed software, find the product keys and installation media. It is a very involved process and not to be undertaken lightly. I don't really feel it is necessary, but I want to eliminate any issue with previously installed software causing issues with the upgrade installation of Windows11 over Windows 10.

I am asking the community and Microsoft support if there are any known or related issues with Windows 11 installation, or any issues with SGX at the installed level with Windows 11.

External (Dell) monitor not recognized any more by Dell Precision 7560 after upgrade to Windows 11

External (Dell) monitor not recognized any more by Dell Precision 7560 after upgrade to Windows 11

    • The connection is via a cable where one end is a DVI port connected to monitor and the other end is a HDMI port connected to laptop
    • My other laptop, Dell XPS 15 with Ubuntu 20 - recognizes the external monitor.
    • Before upgrading to Windows 11, problematic laptop (Dell Precision 7560) had Windows 10, and external monitor was recoginzed.
