Windows 11 Media Creation Tool made the USB device write protected and this is irreversible.

I was trying to create a bootable USB flash drive of Windows 11 using the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool. It completed everything but still ended with Error code 0x80070013 - 0xa001b.I was using Sandisk Ultra Dual 32 GB USB 3.0 OTG Pendrive, just for information. Then I checked the drive, and I came to know that the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool made the USB drive write-protected. I tried everything I could, but no luck in disabling write protection.I am 100% sure that the USB device was perfectly fine before using the tool. It seems like the Windows 11 Media Creation Tool bricked the USB driv

How to remove disk write protection from USB created with Windows Media Creation Tool?

After using the Windows Media Creation Tool to burn an installation image to a USB memory stick, the device is marked as Read Only.

It is not possible to format the device, delete the partition or otherwise make it re-usable. Since I don't have any need for that particular Windows installation image but I do need to create a new installation image, I want to erase the drive and write the latest installation image to it.

    Working as Administrator,

    Format does not work

Diskpart, clean and diskpart attributes disk clear readonly do not clear the read only status of the drive.

The write protection does not appear to be controlled in any way by registry settings.

Using a GParted disk does not allow erasing the disk.

In the past I have been able to unlock a USB memory stick that has been set up by the Windows Media Creation Tool, but that does not seem to be possible any more.

Incidentally, I would expect the Windows Media Creation Tool to be able to re-use the disk, after making sure that is what the user intended to do, but it doesn't recognise the device as usable once an image has been created on it.

    Any NEW suggestions/solutions?

    USB devices getting write protected

    Hi Imdad,

Some removable storage devices like USB flash drives or pen drive have write protection which is designed to help users prevent unexpected data loss by refusing to delete or format.

However, if you’re stuck with a write-protected USB drive that can’t be formatted. We recommend that you follow these steps on how to erase and format a write-protected USB flash drive and pen drive using the Regedit.exe tool in Windows. To do this,
    follow the steps below:

    • In the Search box, type regedit and press Enter.
    • Navigate to the following folder:

      Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies

Double-click on the WriteProtect value in the right-hand pane of Regedit.exe. Change the Value data from 1 to 0 and click OK to save the change. Close Regedit and restart your computer. Connect your USB flash drive or pen drive again, and you should find the
write protection is removed and the device is no longer write protected.

Important: This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully. For added protection,
back up the registry before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, refer to the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article.

How to back up and restore the registry in Windows How to back up and restore the registry in Windows - Microsoft Support.

Let us know if you need further assistance.
