Windows 10: Windows 11. Num Lock turns off when switching users. It is not the BIOS or Hardware....

I've personally placed into production over 20 Dell Windows 11 machines in the past 6 months. Optiplex. XPS. Laptops. All exhibit the same behaviour. When switching users from a standard user to an admin account for installation purposes the NUMLOCK key goes off. It is not the BIOS. It is not the Windows Fast Startup. It is Windows 11. Anyone with a Windows 11 machine can replicate this feature. 1. Start your machine.2. Login with any credentials.3. Turn on your NUMLOCK. 4. Switch to another user. Do not logout. Do not restart. 5. Windows10 Enable Num Lock when turns ons

Thank you for your reply, however I have not had any success.

I had num locked enabled then I followed the steps exactly... unchecked
Turn on fast startup (recommended) and saved the changes. I restarted the computer and num lock is still disabled on start up.

I have also tried another forum suggested method: log in screen press num lock key to enable and then restarting from log in screen. This also did not work. Is it something to do with windows 10??

NUM Lock issue

The status of the NUM LOCK key is specific for each user, and NUM LOCK is disabled by default. If you want the NUM LOCK key enabled for use before a user presses CTRL+ALT+DEL to log on, you must use Registry Editor to change the default behavior.

To enable NUM LOCK before a user logs on, follow these steps:

• Run Registry Editor.
• Move to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.
  
• Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 0 to 2.

Turn Num Lock permanently on

Method 1:

You can turn on or turn off Num Lock in the Basic Input Output System (BIOS). You may have to contact the computer manufacturer to see if it is enabled or not.

Disclaimer: Modifying BIOS/complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) settings incorrectly can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from booting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that any problems resulting from the configuring of BIOS/CMOS

Method 2:

3. Navigate to “HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard”.

4. Change the value for “InitialKeyboardIndicators” from 0 to 2.

5. Restart the computer and then check how it works.
