Windows 11: Old-school Windows dialogs are also getting UI changes

The upcoming Windows 11 (previously known as Sun Valley update) looks set to improve the way the operating system looks. As you may be aware, Windows 11 is dropping icons from Windows 95-era and embracing Fluent icons, but it appears that Microsoft is working on other UI improvements for legacy features, according to the leaked build.

During the June 24 event, Windows 11 will be projected as a modern and next-generation operating system. The official teasers, job listings, and leaks have made the update quite a big deal. For example, one job listing revealed that Windows will be getting the biggest overhaul and Microsoft will be modernizing legacy areas of the platform.

According to the leaked build, Windows 11 still use legacy features, including dialog box from Windows 3.1. This confirms that Microsoft is not completely redesigning Windows, but it looks like the company is updating many aspects of the existing operating systems user interface.

For example, Microsoft has enabled rounded corners and shadow in ODBC Data Source Administrator, one of the oldest legacy tools that allow administrators to connect a Microsoft Access database to an external data source such as Microsoft SQL Server.

ODBC Data Source Administrator tool is apparently getting noticeable UI improvements for the first time since Windows 7. Of course, most people don’t use the OOBC Data Source tool, but this leak confirms that Microsoft has also applied its modern rounded corners treatment to one of the oldest tools.

Legacy apps like Device Manager and disk management tool are now also using rounded corners.

It’s a subtle change, but it’s noticeable and it does seem to improve the overall UI consistency.

As we mentioned at the outset, Microsoft is changing icons too and some of these icons include things such as images of floppy disk drives, networking (chips and modems), globe (internet), etc.

In fact, Control Panel, which still exists on Windows 11, is also using new icons and rounded corners.

There are new icons and rounded corners for Task Manager too. These icons are part of the Fluent Design revamp, which was previously limited to modern apps such as Windows Store, Edge, and Microsoft 365 apps.

Metro UI Tweaker: Make Windows 8 Look Like Windows 7

For those of you trying out the Windows 8 developer release who already hanker for the old Windows 7 look, help is now at hand! Enter Metro UI Tweaker from The Windows Club. From the screenshots below, you can see that things like the Explorer Ribbon and the Metro Start menu can be turned off. It can do a lot more, however.

Note: This application requires the enabling of .NET Framework 3.5.1 on the Windows 8 developer preview as follows:
1 Fire up Control Panel then click on More Settings and go Programs > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off
2 Select .NET Framework 3.5.1 from the listing and click OK
3 Windows will connect to Windows Update to download the required files
4 When that’s done, you’re good to go

The tweaks currently being offered are:

1 Disable Metro Start menu: Disables only Metro Start menu screen. This function requires editing a system file. It does not remove the file
2 Disable Metro Ribbon: Disables only the Metro Ribbon UI. It requires taking ownership of a system file. It does not remove this file
3 Disable Metro Start menu and Ribbon: Disables the Metro Start menu UI, Ribbon UI, Metro Task Manager UI and the lock screen
4 Enable Metro Start menu and Ribbon: Re-enables all available Metro UI options
5 Add power options to the Metro Start menu screen: Logoff, Switch User, Lock, Sleep, Restart and Shutdown
6 Add any application/file to the Metro UI Start menu screen: Some applications/files may not be available to you to add to the Metro Start menu screen. This program allows you to add those applications/files which would otherwise be unavailable

When first run, the program will generate a folder in your Windows directory labelled Metro UI Tools. This folder is there to keep your power option apps in place without worrying about them having to be moved. Once generated and the files are unpacked from the program, do not remove the folder or the power apps from this folder as these options will no longer be available and may generate errors. The program works on 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems. It's constantly being refined, so check the Windows Club website regularly for updates.

Windows 10 UAC not showing dialog after change of settings?

I selected the option in Windows 10 UAC not to dim the screen (3 step down), now when it is expected to launch it doesn't open a modal dialog box. Task Manager reports Consent UI for administrative applications is running, but I can't see it!

I ran User Account Control Settings and switched back to the 2nd step down, but it's annoying to have the dimming.

Any way to get this working?
