It is conceivable though that MS could follow model of other software vendors where the base package is free but you pay extra for premium addons. Pure speculation of course.

Now.. this is something to think/chew on..

What if when RS1 comes out later on this year MS decides to name it 10.1?? Give that RS1 will be a major upgrade to the base OS it might
make sense.. and when RS2 comes out at the end of the year or early next year that will become 10.2??

Ah, right and that of course means they won't do it. Sure.

That sounds nice, but I wonder what significant changes would be there...

I thought this over and I don't know for certain but 10.1 may be the name for the final RS1 build. If it does have major changes/updates it might make
sense to change the entire number from 10 to 10.1.

    Speculating.. but heck. ITs' fun.

It would not be smart for them to charge for any 10 updates/upgrades. That would undermine the entire
    point of the free upgrade.

No disrespect, but I (personally) have never seen a specific statement that they would never charge for premium services. I doubt they would be stupid enough to 'burn their bridges.'.

It was made very early on when the initial insider program was launched. During the presentation to introduce 10 there were statements made about the cost and future costs
    for 10.

  10. Believe what you want, but everything is subject to change and when it comes to money, corporations change their stance when they feel like it.

I do not believe MS goes for decimals. They have made it really clear that Windows 10 will be the last Windows version, which in itself already indicates that they will drop the digits in some time quite near future.

Going for 10.1 would then force them to go to 10.2, 10.3 and so on. I will never believe that.

I am accepting all bets: Windows version name will remain Windows 10 until they totally drop the digits; from there on we will have just plain and simple Windows. Please let me know how much you geeks are willing to bet, I will accept all and every bet.

Honestly, I agree with your points. The only change might be from Win10 to just Windows. But, speculating is so darn FUN!!

I like speculation too. It makes returning to a forum like watching a TV show.
Maybe they'll name new editions after breeds of dogs, just like how MacOSX revisions were named after large cats.

Naming conventions can be unexpectedly dangerous. When the UK first start oil production in the 70's Shell (allegedly) called its first platform A UK. It dawned on them soon they were in trouble by the time they got to the sixth platform (letter F), so they (allegedly) renamed A UK as AUK (a bird), and since then all Shell platforms are named after birds. Probably an apocyrphal story, but funny anyway.

And MS has never changed their mind on something they said?
