Windows 11 Pro Features Every Modern Worker Should Enable in 2026

Windows 11 Pro includes several built-in features that can make a work PC more secure, easier to manage, and better suited to hybrid work. Microsoft includes tools such as BitLocker, Hyper-V, Windows Sandbox, Group Policy, and Remote Desktop in the Pro edition, but many users leave them disabled or never configure them after setup.

These features matter most for professionals who use a laptop for travel, work in shared environments, test software, or need secure remote access to a main PC. The goal is not to turn every workstation into an enterprise-managed machine. It is to enable the protections and tools that make the most practical difference in day-to-day work.

Windows 11 Pro Security Features Worth Turning On First

The most important Windows 11 Pro features are the ones that protect a device if it is lost, left unattended, or exposed to malware.

BitLocker should be at the top of the list

It encrypts the drive so that files cannot be read without the correct credentials if the device is stolen or the storage is removed and accessed elsewhere. This is especially important for work laptops. Turning it on is straightforward through Control Panel > System and Security > BitLocker Drive Encryption. The recovery key matters just as much as the encryption itself, so it should be saved somewhere secure and separate from the PC.

Smart App Control is another useful protection layer

Instead of relying only on traditional malware detection, it blocks untrusted or unsigned apps before they run. That can reduce risk for users who regularly download utilities, scripts, or smaller tools from outside major app stores. Microsoft has also made the feature easier to manage, removing some of the earlier friction around enabling or disabling it.

Dynamic Lock for different work locations

Once paired with a phone over Bluetooth, Windows can automatically lock the PC when the phone moves out of range. That helps reduce the chance of leaving a session open when stepping away for a few minutes.

Controlled folder access for Windows Security’s ransomware protection

It blocks unknown apps from changing files in protected folders such as Documents, Pictures, and Desktop. For workers who keep active files on their main device, this adds a useful safeguard against ransomware and destructive malware.

Windows Sandbox and Hyper-V Help With Safer Testing

Windows 11 Pro includes two built-in virtualization tools that are useful for anyone who needs to test software or open files that should not touch the main system.

Windows Sandbox is the lighter and more practical option for most users. It launches a temporary Windows environment inside an isolated session. Anything opened, installed, or changed inside the sandbox disappears when the session closes. That makes it useful for opening suspicious files, checking unknown installers, testing scripts, or demonstrating software without leaving permanent changes on the main PC.

For users who need something more advanced, Hyper-V offers full virtual machine support. It can run other Windows installations, Linux distributions, and additional test environments alongside the main operating system. Developers, IT admins, and advanced users will get more value from Hyper-V than typical office workers, but it remains one of the strongest reasons to choose Windows 11 Pro over Home.

The practical difference is simple. Sandbox is best for quick, disposable testing. Hyper-V is better for repeatable lab-style setups and compatibility work.

Group Policy and Kiosk Mode Are Useful Beyond IT Departments

Some Windows 11 Pro tools are often treated as IT-only features, but they can also be useful for individual professionals and small teams.

Local Group Policy Editor gives access to advanced settings that do not appear in the standard Settings app. It can be used to manage update behavior, tighten security rules, limit device functions, or configure system components in more detail. It is particularly helpful for users who want more control over Windows Update timing or workstation behavior without relying on registry edits.

Assigned Access, also known as kiosk mode, is more specialized but still relevant in shared-device scenarios. It locks a device to a single app and prevents access to the rest of the operating system. That makes sense for reception desks, self-service terminals, training stations, or any environment where a PC should do one job and nothing else.

Not every worker will need either feature, but both show the difference between Pro as a consumer upgrade and Pro as a more manageable workstation platform.

Remote Desktop Remains One of the Most Practical Pro Features

For hybrid work, Remote Desktop is still one of the most useful Windows 11 Pro features. It allows a Pro PC to host a remote session so users can connect to it from another Windows device, tablet, or phone.

That matters when a main office PC contains files, apps, or internal tools that are not easily duplicated on a travel laptop. Once enabled in Settings > System > Remote Desktop, the feature can provide direct access to the main workstation without moving data between devices.

For local network access, setup is straightforward. For remote access outside the office or home network, most users will still need a VPN or another secure access method. That extra setup is worth it for workers who regularly switch between home and office machines.

    What Workers Should Enable Now?

Not every Windows 11 Pro feature needs to be turned on at once. For most people, the most useful starting combination is BitLocker, Controlled Folder Access, Dynamic Lock, and Remote Desktop. Those changes improve protection and daily workflow without changing how the PC feels to use.

Windows Sandbox makes sense for anyone who regularly opens unknown files or tests software. Hyper-V is more appropriate for advanced use. Group Policy and Assigned Access are valuable, but mostly when there is a specific management or shared-device need.

Windows 11 Pro is often treated as a version of Windows that simply costs more. In practice, its value comes from the extra controls and protections already included in the operating system. Many of the most useful ones just need to be enabled.

    Can't enable Modern Standby

You need an exclusively UEFI PC (without Legacy support) for Modern/Connected, at least it's what I've heard. I guess if that Z390 doesn't have it, I am not really expecting any consumer desktops to implement it, I assume it would require manufacturers to kinda rewrite their BIOS. It is also indirectly suggested on Anandtech that the feature depends on the onboard WiFi:

Personally I love my Ethernet cables and 1Gbit speeds, and WiFi would be the last thing I'd do to my PC, but I would like to test this feature when I buy a new PC, since Z370 is clearly out of question. Considering that Z390 basically has onboard WiFi and Z370 doesn't , it further solidifies this as a potential WiFi only feature. Maybe it's possible for the PC to switch to WiFi for Connected Standby and then back to wire after it wakes up? That would be nice.

    Edit: there's also this:
"Modern Standby is only available on some SoC systems. When it's supported, the system does not support S1-S3."

Yeah... S3 is the "normal" standby. So if your firmware manufacturer supports that, it's bye-bye Modern? Ouch.

  3. How do I re-enable my modern standby sleep mode (S0)?

Modern standby (S0) is indeed designed to allow for faster wake times, which can be convenient for many users. However, one drawback is that it doesn't allow the PC to fully shut down, which means it may continue consuming some power even when in sleep mode. Additionally, some users have reported issues with laptops becoming excessively hot when placed in their backpacks while in modern standby mode.

On the other hand, S3 sleep mode is a deeper sleep state where the system is essentially powered down, resulting in lower power consumption. While wake times may be slightly longer compared to modern standby, S3 can be preferable for those who prioritize power efficiency and want to ensure their laptop doesn't generate excess heat during periods of inactivity. Here are the steps to enable Modern standby:

    1. Open Registry Editor:
      • Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
      • Type regedit and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.
    2. Navigate to the Power Settings:
      • In the Registry Editor, navigate to the following path:

    3. Modify the Registry Key:
      • Look for the PlatformAoAcOverride key.
      • If it exists, right-click on it and select Delete.
      • If it does not exist, you can skip this step.
    4. Enable Modern Standby:
      • Open an elevated Command Prompt (right-click on Command Prompt and select "Run as administrator").
      • Enter the following command to delete the registry entry that disables Modern Standby:

    5. Restart Your Computer:
      • Restart your computer to apply the changes.

Verify Modern Standby (S0) is Enabled

    1. Open Command Prompt:
      • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    2. Run Power Configuration Command:
      • Type the following command and press Enter:

      • This command will list the available sleep states. Look for "Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)" to confirm that Modern Standby is enabled.
Please feel free to reach out if you require any additional assistance. I'm here to help!

Unable to upgrade Windows 11 Home to 11 Pro

Thanks much, Dave, indeed it was a big job.

Clean install of Windows 11 from a bootable USB helped to Activate the Pro.

Just to summarize what was done:

    1. Took backup of the drives and save some on cloud.
    2. Installed the Media creation tool app as you suggested (https://www.microsoft.com/software-...t=Windows 11 Installation-,Media,-If you want)
    3. Connected the USB and ran the application and downloaded the Windows 11.
      1. additional thing which I had to do is to install WLAN driver to the USB in advance, to have the WIFI option available as it was required to connect to a network to download the latest windows features while reinstalling the Windows, and Wi-Fi option was not available.
    4. Turned off the 'Secure boot' from the BIOS menu.
    5. Changed the 'Boot Order' in the BIOS menu to first use the USB Boot.
    6. Saved and Exit, which triggered Restart and Windows installation.
    7. During the network connecting stage to install the latest updates and features - 'Let's Connect you to a network', I opened the CMD (Shift + F10) and ran than WLAN driver exe to install it and then I was able to connect to my WIFI network.
      1. Optional to this step is to BYPASS the network connection stage by following this - bypass "lets connect you to a network" - Microsoft Community
      2. Then, doing that manually once Windows has been installed.
    8. Once everything is set-up, I followed the suggestion from this again, and it worked - Unable to upgrade Windows 11 Home to 11 Pro - Microsoft Community
