Windows 10: windows 11 recognizes my external hp dvd556s dvd/cd drive but will not play dvd's or cd's

Hi All:Windows 11 recognizes my external hp dvd556s dvd/cd drive but will not play dvd's or cd's on my lenovo laptop. Windows 11 tells me disc structure is corrupt or unreadable. But Windows 11 will automatically play the same dvd or cd on my dell laptop? The lenovo came with windows 11. the Dell was upgraded to windows 11 from windows 8 and 10. Windows tell me I have the best driver installed for the DVD/CD drive.

I have an HP running Windows 11 and it has no internal CD / DVD. It will not recognize external CD / DVD device.

I have an HP running Windows 11 and it has no internal CD / DVD. Bought an external but it will not recognize the external CD / DVD device.
I have done everything the manufacturer (Gotega) advised me to do. I cannot find any driver downloads on here for CD / DVD devices at all.

Anyone having same issue? If so, is it this brand of drive that is the issue? What drive works with laptop that has no internal and is running Windows 11?

CD/DVD drive not recognized

First, try inserting a disc in the drive, does it spin up?
--Yes, I put a blank CD in, and it spins up.

A few other suggestions

Try uninstalling the device in Dev mgr, wait 2 or 3 minutes and if Windows doesn't cycle though hardware changes, right click any device and select Scan for Hardware changes.

--Yes, I've uninstalled it and waited. Tried this with the CD in. Nothing happened after a few minutes, so I did the Scan for Hardware changes. Still Unknown Device. I've even tried updating and grabbing the drivers off the HP site, updating those drivers didn't help. Tried the update drivers, didn't fix the issue.

You might also want to check File and Folder options in File Explorer
press the blue file menu,
select Change folder and Serach options
select the View tab
is show empty drives selected?

---This was hidden. I've unhidden it as in the screen shot of my folder options.

It would help members if you could post a screen shot of Dev mgr device properties (post the first 4 tabs)

If it is an unknown device -post the General tab and the Details.
On the Details tab, select Hardware IDs from the drop down box

I'm not sure if these suggestions will help. I had a similar issue with a CD drive on a Vista box, turned out to be a hardware issue on the Mobo. The optical drive is really controlled by a few settings (DVD, CD, Writer) and when it doesn't work, it is hard to diagnose.

If the device worked before (recently), it's a Win10 issue, and it might be version specific. There are known issues with AMD graphics drivers, this might extend to the chipset as well - those with Intel boards / CPUs can ignore this part. It's a guess anyway.

--Installed WIN 10 with this drive, it worked until 10 was installed.

If you're comfortable with hardware, you might try removing the optical drive from the box, restarting without it attached, and then shut down, reinstall the optical drive and start up the machine.

Follow instructions in the service manual for your device or on the mfr website.

---I'm okay with opening latops. I've opened this one 3 times, adding SSD HD and upgrading RAM. I'll be able to try this later on, Friday, probably. With it spinning up when a CD is inserted, I'm not sure this would help. I'd appreciate advice on this.

External CD/DVD Drive

Hi Microsoft :

I recently purchased an external cd/dvd drive. The problem is with re-writeable CDs. FORMATTING and re-writing. The unit works with re-writeable DVDs (FORMATTING and re-writing. When I checked in DEVICE MANAGER, it lists the drive with the HP brand. Listing it as "hp cd/dvd W SN208FB". Even though the brand name on the drive is Roofull (I got it on Amazon). [Even though SOME USB devices don"t need a driver----some do]

My System : Dell Latitude 7490 laptop......Windows 10 Pr0 64-bit.....16Gb RAM....512Gb SSD.

Should I look into finding an HP driver for this cd/dvd burner ?
