Windows 10: Windows 11 recovery problems

“Laptop’s screen goes black at startup, only mouse pointer visible but freezes. Advanced Recovery Tool and DOS boot are unresponsive. No DVD drive. Made a recovery thumb drive, but can’t access due to ART freeze. Need help troubleshooting.”

Windows 11 - Update problem

KB5031455 is a non-security/Preview update that can be skipped. You may instead wait for the Nov Cumulative update, which will be released on Nov 14.

Meanwhile, let's try to enable WinRE on your computer.

Step 1:

Start Windows normally. From a Command Prompt window, run:

dir C:\Windows\System32\Recovery /a

If winre.wim is missing from that folder, extract a copy of winre.wim from the Windows 11 ISO. See 7-Zip instructions in this article How to Extract Specific Files from Windows 10/11 ISO.

Copy the extracted winre.wim into "C:\Windows\System32\Recovery" folder.

Step 2:

From admin Command Prompt, run:

• diskpart
  
• list vol
  
• select vol # -- Replace # with the volume number of the 2000 MB Win_RE partition.
  
• set id=ebd0a0a2-b9e5-4433-87c0-68b6b72699c7
  
• gpt attributes=0x0000000000000000
  
• assign letter=K
  
• exit
  

• md K:\Recovery\WindowsRE
  
• cd /d K:\Recovery\WindowsRE
  
• del c:\windows\system32\recovery\reagent.xml /a
  
• reagentc /disable
  
• xcopy /h C:\Windows\System32\Recovery\winre.wim
  
• reagentc /setreimage /path K:\Recovery\WindowsRE /target C:\Windows
  

Step 3:

• diskpart
  
• select vol # -- Replace # with the volume number of the 2000 MB Win_RE partition.
  
• remove
  
• set id=de94bba4-06d1-4d40-a16a-bfd50179d6ac
  
• gpt attributes=0X8000000000000001
  
• exit
  
• reagentc /enable
  
• reagentc /info
  

 

Data Recovery for Mac (OSX Capitan) ?

Anybody knows of a good data recovery software for mac? Preferably free?

I use Active@ Data Recovery for Windows, but honestly no idea what to use for Mac OSX.

Any suggestions?
