Windows 11 Task view creating hundreds of desktops on its own

Hi,I have just managed to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11.I noticed that Task View isn't behaving as expected. The expected behaviour is to have one desktop available, and a button to create more. However it seems like my Task View creates 839 desktops without being asked. So the first time I clicked on Task View, it takes a long time to pop up and show all the available desktops. Is there any way to fix this? Here's a video of me opening Task View for the first time since boot: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVYoo9DwxHE

  2. Windows 10 task view assign applications

    Hi,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

As per the description, I understand that you are facing difficulty in assigning the applications to a specific virtual desktop. Let me help you in clearing your doubts.

The virtual desktops feature in Windows 10 is called “Task View” and is located on the Taskbar.

I suggest you to follow the steps and check if it helps.

Step 1: Click Task view. When you open the Task View interface for the first time, or you only have one desktop, the “Add a desktop” button is available.

Step 2: Click it to add virtual desktop.

Step 3: Open the apps that you want to use on that desktop.

Step 4: Click Task view again to switch between desktops.

Hope the information helps. Please keep us posted on Windows related query and we will be happy to assist you further.

  3. Task View

It's the Task View, not the Task Bar, that is the problem. I should be getting the popup (right clicking on Task View) showing the options for additional Desktops, not the five options for the Task Bar. A 'chat' with MS Solutions said that I should reinstall
Windows 10 to MAYBE correct this problem. Any suggestions to correct?? Thanks for your interest...I really appreciate it.
The Task View is the only feature that I may like on 10!!

Task View Disabled in Windows 10

    Hi Robert,

Thank you for posting your query on Microsoft Community.

The icon (two overlapping rectangles) is called as the Task View
which is a virtual desktop manager in Windows 10 and has nothing to with the Cortana feature.Task
View is launched from the task bar and enables users to create different arrangements of their running apps.

The various features of Task View are

    • Clicking on the Task View icon reveals a prompt to add a desktop. To create a new desktop, simply click on the Add a Desktop link.
    • Upon clicking the Add a Desktop link, your
      view
changes to reveal two desktops, plus a blank desktop with a plus sign on it. The desktop shown on the left is the original desktop. The middle desktop is the one that was just created. The black desktop with the plus sign is really just an icon
that you can click to create additional desktops. In other words, you aren't limited to only two desktops. Incidentally, it is also possible to create a new desktop by pressing WINKEY + Ctrl + D.
    • To view a desktop full screen, just click on it. You can switch desktops at any time by clicking on the
Task View icon and then clicking on your desktop of choice. You can also click on the
Task View icon and then click the black icon with the plus sign to create a new desktop.
    • Each desktop that you create functions as an independent
Windows desktop. In other words, each desktop can have its own set of open
      windows.
    • There are two really good things about the way that Microsoft has implemented the
Task View feature. First, open windows are not permanently bound to a specific desktop. If you want to move an open window to another desktop, you can do so by right clicking on the window and choosing the
Move To command from the shortcut menu. Similarly, if you happen to close a desktop then any
windows that are open on that desktop will be automatically moved to another desktop.
    • The other thing about the way that task
view works is that you can still use Alt + Tab to switch between open
windows. This holds true regardless of which desktop a window might be open on. Pressing Alt + Tab gives you a consolidated
view of all open windows across all desktops.

I see that it is being disabled in your system to enable it follow the below steps,

    1. Right click on the Task Bar.

    2. Click on Show the Task View button.

    3. The Task View will appear and then you can use it.

Keep us posted if you face any issues on windows in future. We will be glad to help you.
